The Uncool 3: Prejudice - May 24, 2007

The Uncool said of their Savior that He "opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble," and "He chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; and the weak things of the world to shame the strong."

This is born out in accusations leveled against The Uncool through the ages in other enlightened societies. The fact is, the trend toward maligning the Uncool in the media and entertainment industries was nothing new. They'd often been charged with being primitive, simple-minded, backward or worse. Some of these accusations had even been true.
You see, in the past, there were times when the Uncool were considered cool. That's why many would name themselves among the Uncool yet prove themselves not to be, by committing atrocious acts that the Savior would never sanction.

Some of those claiming to be among the Uncool (when they were cool) had done wicked things in the Name of their Savior -- things the Savior Himself would oppose, and yes, even some of the genuine Uncool sometimes got caught up in these misguided acts. Other times, the Uncool themselves made poor decisions, though often well-intentioned ones. Yet those in the enlightened society attributed this wickedness, bad decisions, and all-around uncoolness to ALL the Uncool, prejudging them, even though this enlightened society prided itself on its tolerance and lack of prejudicial thought.

Some even thought it was cool to masquerade as the Uncool for some type of gain. Because of these things, many citizens in the enlightened society blamed all the Uncool, past and present. The citizens didn't recognize this attitude as the very thing they despised most -- prejudice.

But the true Uncool would rather be simple-minded and right than the most intelligently wrong people in the universe. So they continued to strive to follow their Savior, albeit stumblingly. Some of them are indeed simple. Others, as intellectually gifted as any the world has produced. Yet all are united by one series of facts.

If you've followed this series on the Uncool in the enlightened society, you've likely long since caught on that the enlightened society is our own, the Uncool are Christians, and the Savior is Jesus Christ. Tongue-in-cheek though it's been, this Uncool writer hopes this series has at least caused you to see some important issues from a different point-of-view.

As William E. Biederwolf once said, "I saw about a peck of counterfeit dollars once. Did I go to the window and throw away all my good dollars? No! Yet you reject Christianity because there are hypocrites, or counterfeit Christians." Are you missing out on what may be the most profound blessing of your existence, because some who practice (and others who only claim to practice) this way of life are not exemplary people? I hope you will look into the real basis for this faith, and judge for yourself, rather than base your opinion on others' behavior, or prejudicial negative stereotypes.
