Eternity... Eternal... Eternal life... Forever.... Everlasting...
words tossed around frequently, but have you ever really stopped to think about Eternity?
Warning... a lot of math here...
The Bible says our fleshly bodies are like grass... ( 1 Pet 1:24; )
Just here for a season and then it withers away... the flower falls off.
Our life is fleeting, in eternity is just a vapor of smoke that appears for just an instant... and then is gone. ( James 4:14; )
We are so worried about this life. What people think about us. What we can acquire for ourselves.
And this life is nothing... it is just a fraction of a second in the context of eternity.
The song Amazing grace.... one stanza has lyrics that say... When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days, to sing God's praise than when we first began.
If I had a rope, and I stood on top of the World Trade center in New York city (1,776 feet tall)
How many dollar bills would I have to stack up on top of one another to reach the top of the building?
The moon is 239,000 miles from the earth. If I had a stack of dollar bills piled up on top of one another,
how many dollar bills would it take to reach the moon? Millions? Billions? Trillions?
And yet, our earthly temporal life... would be shorter than just one of the dollar bills in the length of eternity.
Even that isn't really a good example. How about the nearest star? It is 39,900,000,000,000 kilometers
away. (4.37 light years) How many dollar bills would I have to stack up now to get there?
I'm not sure science has a number that large, but whatever it is.... still your life would only be less than
one dollar bill thickness in the length of eternity.
How about the farthest star? It is believed that the farthest known star from is earth, is about 900,000
light year distant. If a light year is about (6,000,000,000,000) 6 trillion miles, and we multiply that times
the 900,000 (light years) how many miles is that? How many dollar bills stacked up would it take to get there now? Still your life is only the thickness of one of the dollar bills. Even less than that.
Our life here on earth is nothing. Just a second, just an instant, just a vapor. Just a puff of smoke.
The thing is.... we will all live in eternity. Some of us will live in heaven... not just the spiritual
kingdom of heaven here on earth... but the physical heaven that Jesus has prepared for us.
The Bible says eye has seen, and no ear has heard what God has prepared for us. ( 1 Cor 2:9; )
I think it will be an amazing place, that we don't even have words to describe. Some of us will
reign in heaven with God forever and ever ( Rev 22:5; )
Other of us will live in Hades, the lake of fire... for eternity. In agony, in torment.
Eternity... forever... ( Rev 14:11; Rev 20:10; etc.. )
Where will you spend eternity? What about other people you know... family, friends, loved ones.
Where will they spend eternity? Are you doing anything to persuade them to follow Christ?
Are you witnessing to them? Maybe fear of hell isn't a good reason to get saved, but even that reason
is better than burning forever. Some people come to Jesus out of fear of hell. But after they get to know Him, that isn't the reason they stay with Him.
Whatever the mathematical answer to the question above are... it doesn't matter... how ever many dollar
bills we have stacked up... it doesn't matter... because even that number... is just a blink in eternity.
