Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, Colossians 3:9

The goal of any fly fisherman is to catch fish by using hooks adorned with fur, feathers, hair, and other materials in such a way that they imitate an insect or other living creatures fish like to eat. A good fisherman uses flies he knows can deceive a hungry fish into biting.

While no one would criticize or condemn a fly fisherman for practicing this form of deception, the Bible tells you repeatedly that as followers of Christ you are to be completely honest with others in how you speak to them and how you treat them—no “white lies,” twisted truths, or spin.

You live in a world in which politicians, marketers, and many others regularly practice all sorts of deception in an effort to get people to cast their votes or spend their money in a way they want them to. But it should never be that way for believers.

As a Christian man, you damage your relationship with God—and your witness for Christ—when you speak untruthfully or when you behave in such a way as to deceive others. On the other hand, when you make honesty a big part of who you are, you please your heavenly Father and glorify Him in front of those around you.
