God is Spirit:
John 4:24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.
God created man in His image:
Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
We are in His image because God created man with a spirit, man has a spirit, which was formed by God's breath. This makes us different from all the rest of creation, animals etc:
Job 32:8 But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.
The spirit of man is immortal because it is from the breath of the Immortal God:
Ecc 12:7 and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
Between Christ and the believer a real, practical, and spiritual union has taken place. Marriage is actually a symbol of this union:
1 Cor 6:17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
Eph 5: 31 As the Scriptures say, "A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one."
Eph 5:32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.
Being born again, or spiritual birth.. is the joining of the Spirit of God with the human spirit, thus making it alive:
John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
It is because of this spiritual union with the Eternal Spirit that we have eternal life, and can never perish:
John 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
Eternal life is not a "thing" that God gives us... actually eternal life is Christ Himself:
John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
1 Cor 15:45 The Scriptures tell us, "The first man, Adam, became a living person." But the last Adam--that is, Christ--is a life-giving Spirit.
The only uncreated one in this whole universe is God Himself. The greatest good gift He can give to man is the Gift of Himself:
Luke 11:13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"
The Gift of His Spirit brings His life to make alive all our deadness, and His light to shine away all our darkness:
Rom 8:11
And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.
1 Cor 6:19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?...
2 Cor 4:6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Because the born again spirit is born of God, spiritual growth can only happen by the Spirit not by works of the flesh. The apostles ministered to the spirit, not to the flesh:
Rom 1:11 For I long to visit you so I can bring you some spiritual gift that will help you grow strong in the Lord.
John 6:63 The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
The difference between natural gifts/talents/abilities (e.g. playing music) and spiritual gifts (prophesy, teaching etc).. is that the spiritual gifts minister to the spirit and result in spiritual growth:
1 Cor 12:11 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
The purpose of spiritual gifts is to edify the Body, in other words, to strengthen the spirit within each believer so they can endure and overcome:
Prob 18:14 The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?
The life giving water that Christ gives us is the Spirit, and with the Spirit comes eternal life. This Spirit satisfies our thirst, and satisfies our deepest part, our spirit.
John 4:14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
A result of this satisfaction of thirst is contentment. If we are thirsting for things or people other than Christ, we only need to drink of the Spirit to be content again:
Phil 4:11:13 11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
It is because of the One Spirit joined to all the human spirits of believers, that all believers are one body:
1 Cor 12:14
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized byone Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.
God dwelling with and in the spirit of man of all His believers is God's spiritual temple, His dwelling place on Earth:
1 Pet 2:5 And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What's more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God.
