Then they said to one another, "In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us." Genesis 42:21 ESV
Years had passed since ten brothers sold their brother into slavery. There is little indication that they expressed remorse or regret for their sin. What they had done became the skeleton in ten closets. So, when personal disaster struck, they could finally admit cause and effect. They were in Egypt, and they needed food for their families. Everything that could go wrong showed up in one potent delivery.
It was easy on their bad day to conclude that what they had done to Joseph was the reason they struggled on their shopping trip. The brothers must have been thinking a lot about their past. It must have been on their minds, if not their lips, for a very long time. It must have gnawed a hole in their heart. Guild grew into something they could not contain, and after an agonizingly long time, they finally spoke truth and admitted their sin.
This is a place where things can change, second chances begin, and burdens are removed.
Prayer: Father, waiting for years to admit I was wrong is a waste of time. When I’ve made the wrong choice, help me recognize my sin and admit You’ve always been right.
