The scarlet thread

This is a lengthy scripture passage, but please bare with me.

Luke 3:23; When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, the son of Joseph, the son of Eli,
Luke 3:24; the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
Luke 3:25; the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Hesli, the son of Naggai,
Luke 3:26; the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,
Luke 3:27; the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,
Luke 3:28; the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
Luke 3:29; the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi,
Luke 3:30; the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,
Luke 3:31; the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David,
Luke 3:32; the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon,
Luke 3:33; the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Ram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah,
Luke 3:34; the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,
Luke 3:35; the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Heber, the son of Shelah,
Luke 3:36; the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,
Luke 3:37; the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan,
Luke 3:38; the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.

This is the lineage of Jesus on Mary's side. Now of course Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit.
But still if we look at his "earthly" ancestry, we see some familiar names.

Adam... Enoch... Methuselah... Noah.. Shem... Abraham... Isaac... Jacob... Judah... Boaz... David... Jesse...

Everyone of these people has a story in the old testament somewhere. Perhaps we read about Jospeph
or Boaz or even David, not realizing they are all Jesus's great great great.... grandfathers.

I have one more passage to mention here.
This is Jesus's earthly ancestry on Joseph's side of the family.
It only goes back to Abraham, not all the way to Adam.

Matt 1:1; The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Matt 1:2; Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
Matt 1:3; Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram.
Matt 1:4; Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon.
Matt 1:5; Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse.
Matt 1:6; Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah.
Matt 1:7; Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa.
Matt 1:8; Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah.
Matt 1:9; Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.
Matt 1:10; Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah.
Matt 1:11; Josiah became the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.
Matt 1:12; After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel.
Matt 1:13; Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor.
Matt 1:14; Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud.
Matt 1:15; Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob.
Matt 1:16; Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.
Matt 1:17; So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.

Again we see several familiar names from the old testament.

Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Rahab, Boaz, Jesse, David, Solomon, Ruth, Asam, Jehoshaphat, etc....
Many of these are the same names as on Mary's side of the family in the previous post. A few are different,
escpecially once we get to the last 400 years, almost all the names are different.

I think it's interesting that the lineage of Jesus has a prostitute (Rahab the Harlot) and a few Kings as well
( David, Solomon, Asa, Jehoshaphat ). This was part of reason Jesus was qualified to be the King of Israel.

Matt 27:37; And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, "THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS."

Now that verse, they did this as a mockery of Jesus... I wonder if it ever crossed their minds, that Jesus was actually
of the royal lineage of the house of David?
As best as I see it.....No, Melchizedek was not the same person as Jesus, contrary to a rather popular notion that stems from a misunderstanding of certain passages in Hebrews 7.

I would agree, But although he might not be Jesus. I think he would qualify as a "type" of Jesus ( Heb 7:11-28; )
in that he was a priest. This might be a better question for the OT vs NT thread. :)

do you think it was Jesus that appeared to Abraham as the Melchizedek priest?
I was hoping to keep this thread to the bloodline of Jesus. I was wondering if most people are aware how much
of the old testament is about Jesus's "ancestors". (He was before them all, but you know what I mean). :)
For example most of us know the story of Noah (the ark and the flood). But do we realize he is also
Jesus's ancestor? ( Luke 3:36; )
yes the blood line of Jesus I recall hearing that is exactly why Jesus earthly father had to die if not Jesus would not of had the right to inherit the high priest position in the Melchizedek order. this is off the top of my head and may be a little fuzzy on the detail.

Dear Brother @B-A-C
First and foremost. I hope this is not putting you out there. That is not my reason for this. I truly hope you can expand upon this curiosity of mine that goes back to when I first heard of this. Your post just tickled my memory of it.

My hope is that you might have understanding of the Curse that was placed upon Jeconiah (Jeremiah 22:30) by God and how it fits in with him being in the lineage of Joseph's side (Matthew 1:11-12).

This should make for an interesting delving into one part of our Lord's lineage from OT to NT for our Brothers & Sisters in Christ.

With the Love of Christ Jesus.
Your Brother and Fellow Servant in Christ Jesus. .
It seems there were no kings of the line of David for a long time after this.
Zedekiah (some Bibles say Mattaniah) was a Son of Jeconiah. ( 1 Chron 3:17-18; )
was the last of the earthly line of David to be king of Judah.

there were no "Kings of Judah" after this curse.
Hence the curse was true until Jesus came. However just a few verses later God says...

Jer 23:5 "Behold, the days are coming," declares the LORD, "When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; And He will reign as king and act wisely And do justice and righteousness in the land.
Jer 23:6 "In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, 'The LORD our righteousness.'

There was a vow made in 1 Kings also.

1 Kin 2:45; "But King Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD forever."

How technical do we want to get? Israel wasn't even a country for... (about a thousand years?) How could there be a king?
On the other hand when Jesus sits on the throne on earth again (Millennial reign) will the throne David be established "forever"?
Also is Jesus only King of Judah, or all of Israel? (the entire earth and universe for that matter)

On Joseph's side, after David it breaks off into Solomon. Eventually we get to Jeconiah and Shealtiel.

On Mary's side, after David, it breaks off to Nathan and Mattatha.
(Technically the kingship could not be passed on by the mothers side)
But if it did, it would by-pass Jeconiah.

Yes, you are right. Other than Melchizedek, the priests were of the tribe of Levi. Yet Jesus isn't a Levite.
He is of Judah.

Heb 7:14; For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, a tribe with reference to which Moses spoke nothing concerning priests.
