And the vessel that he was making from clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he made it over, reworking it into another vessel as it seemed good to the potter to make it. Jeremiah 18:4 AMPC
Making pottery requires clay, a potter’s wheel, and patience.
To make clay, a potter takes dirt, mixes it with water, and pours it into an empty vessel, allowing heavy stones and other impurities to drop to the bottom of the mix. He pours the purified mixture into a cloth bag so the water can run out, leaving the clay behind.
Once the clay is free of impurities and has reached the proper moisture level, it is repeatedly slammed onto a surface to remove any air bubbles. The potter then begins to work the clay between his hands in preparation for turning it on the wheel. Finally, the potter gently shapes the clay with the wheel into whatever he needs. The clay doesn’t get to decide what to be.
Isaiah 64:8 (AMPC) says, “Yet, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our Potter, and we all are the work of Your hand.”
There will be uncomfortable times in life when God is refining you, helping you work out impurities. You may feel slammed or squeezed, but God is simply preparing you for a specific purpose. Trust the Potter. Let Him shape you as He sees fit.
Prayer: Lord, help me trust You always.
