“To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing. For,

“The one who desires life, to love and see good days,
Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
He must turn away from evil and do good;
He must seek peace and pursue it.” (1 Peter 3:8-11 NASB1995)

All of us includes the entire universal body of Christ, both male and female, who have trusted in Jesus Christ to be Lord (Owner-Master) and Savior of our lives. And to be harmonious with one another has to do with being in accord with the will of God and his purpose for us who believe on the name of Jesus. So it will never involve the compromising of the teachings of the Scriptures or of moral purity or of obedience to God and to his commands. Harmony with one another has to include harmony with God and his Word.

And to be sympathetic is never to tolerate slavery to sin in the lives of those who call themselves followers of Jesus Christ. We are not to be hateful, mean, or nasty to anyone who calls himself a Christian but who is walking in sin. But we should speak the truth of the gospel to them, in love, letting them know what the Scriptures teach about those who profess the name of Jesus but who are still living in deliberate and habitual sin against the Lord. For this is for their good, to know the truth that will set them free.

And kindhearted is never to include speaking lies to people just to make them feel good. For lies are never kind. The truth, spoken in love, is what is kind, even if it doesn’t feel good to those who hear it. Kind is not soft balling the truth of the gospel to make it less offensive and more agreeable and pleasant to itching ears. But truth spoken must be done in genuine love, humility, care, and concern for those who need to hear the truth of God’s Word so that they can now walk in that truth and no longer as slaves to sin.

For the gospel of Jesus Christ is not just about Jesus dying on that cross, and rising from the dead, so that we will be forgiven our sins and promised eternal life with God in heaven. For when Jesus died, our sins died with him, and when he rose from the dead, it was in victory over sin so that by God-gifted and God-persuaded faith in him we will now deny self, die to sin, and walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands in holy living. It was so that we will turn away from evil and now do the good God has for us to do.

For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

For by God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, which is not of our own doing, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to righteousness in walks of obedience to God’s commands. We are no longer to permit sin to reign in our mortal bodies to make us obey its desires. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience to God is what we obey, it results in sanctification, and its end is eternal life with God (see Romans 6:1-23).

“For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous,
And His ears attend to their prayer,
But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” (1 Peter 3:12 NASB1995)

As the Deer

By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
