Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. Revelation 21:1-2 ESV
John presents the image of the new Jerusalem “as a bride adorned for her husband.” The holy city will come down and everyone will look on it with awe. This will be God’s permanent dwelling place. A loud voice from heaven will say, “The dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God” (Revelation 21:3 ESV). What a day that will be!
You are on the threshold of a new year. It won’t be anywhere near as glorious as the new heaven and new earth, or the new Jerusalem, but it will be a fresh start. It’s a chance to begin new habits while shunning old ones. You will fall short, no doubt, but you’ll have the New Jerusalem to look forward to one day. Spend today imagining what it might look like.
Prayer: Lord, as this year ends, and the next one is about to begin, it paints a picture of renewal and new opportunities. It’s just a glimpse of what’s to come, but I can’t wait!
