let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father's house have sinned. Nehemiah 1:6 ESV

Having lived in exile and then returning to the ruins of Jerusalem, Nehemiah knew that his people, his family, and even he himself had sinned greatly against the Lord. He fixed his mind on setting things right with God, asking the Lord to hear his daily prayers and confessions. He didn’t try to cover up his wrongs or the wrongs of his ancestors. He faced the past with integrity and humility, creating an opportunity for restoration and a new beginning.

At your lowest point of failure and sin, the place to begin is always an honest and clear assessment of your wrongs and even the wrongs of your family. Sometimes patterns of sin can be modeled and passed down from one generation to the next. Like Nehemiah, you can bring your own failures and the failures of your family to God with the hope that God will listen and send help. Failure and sin never have to be the end for God’s people. You can trust that God will honor your humility and honesty.

Prayer: Lord, help me to see and to confess my sins.
