There was a believer in Joppa named Tabitha (which in Greek is Dorcas). She was always doing kind things for others and helping the poor. Acts 9:36 NLT

This full story is just eight verses long, and it ends with Tabitha rising from the dead. That’s a miracle and worthy of celebration, but this story started in the mind, heart, and soul with the phrase There was a believer. These words should lead you to remember that there’s a meeting between all the things that make you who you are, and that meeting results in a decision to believe. That belief is in the God who has a purpose for every part of your life.

The evidence of God’s work shows up in Tabitha’s life. She was kind and compassionate. These aren’t natural tendencies. That would be left to rudeness and selfishness. You never need much encouragement to try these last two.

Tabitha’s story is one of many that feature little-known characters in the biblical narrative who are defined by their love for God. The thoughts you think aren’t just important to your actions, they lead to the choices that will be what people remember about you.

Prayer: God, at the end of my life, I want people to recall more than what I did for a living when they think about me. I want to be a thoughtful believer who’s kind and helpful because those are two things that look a lot like You.
