For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling; I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living. Psalm 116:8-9 ESV
As the presumed author of Psalm 116, David may have been thinking about his many trials, including Saul’s attempts on his life, or perhaps his own son rebelling against him. In any case, David eventually experienced deliverance and comfort from the Lord, and that led to him walking before the Lord “in the land of the living.”
That little phrase is important.
Bible commentator Matthew Henry points out that the land of the living is “is a land of mercy, which we ought to be thankful for; it is a land of opportunity, which we should improve.” He goes on to note that the promised land id called the “land of the living” in Ezekiel 26:20; it’s a place where the Lord promised to set beauty.
You’ve been delivered from sin and death. You may have even been delivered from your enemies. So what does walking in the land of the living look like for you? Are you walking in freedom or stuck in bondage? Is the other side of your transformation beautiful, or is it messy and ugly?
You’ve been transformed by the Gospel. Walk in the newness of life.
Prayer: Lord, I haven’t always chosen to walk in Your mercy and grace, but I want to change that. Empower me to make a better choice today.
