Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, Philippians 2:14-15
Believers in Christ are called to be lights shining in the world, but nothing puts a lamp shade on your light like negativity.
Robert Sapolsky, professor of neurology and neuroendocrinology at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, has studied the effects on the brain of exposure to negativity. He found that exposure to stressors for more than thirty minutes can lead to increased levels of Cortisol, which can harm brain function and increase cell death. So, negative people literally hurt your brain.
When believers engage in the kind of grumbling and fighting that is common in the world, people, naturally distance themselves, tuning out whatever positive message the negative people are trying to convey.
In order to be an effective light in the darkness, you need to take off the lamp shade of negativity. Don’t let God’s people become known for fighting among ourselves. Instead let god be known to others through love.
Prayer: Lord, You are the Light of the World and You call me to shine too. May Your light shine in me so others can see You. Keep me from doing anything that would cast shade on Your name or Your people.
