The Importance of Preparation

Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, Which, having no captain, Overseer or ruler, Provides her supplies in the summer, [And] gathers her food in the harvest. Proverbs 6:6-8

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mike Tyson was the most feared man in all of heavyweight professional boxing. But on February 11, 1990, a lightly regarded challenger named James “Buster” Douglas knocked out the then-undefeated (17-0) Tyson in the tenth round of a championship flight in Tokyo, Japan, to become world heavyweight champion.

Even the most casual sports enthusiasts still consider Douglas’s win over Tyson one of the greatest upsets in sports history. But boxing insiders have since stated that Tyson lost, in large part, because he didn’t take Douglas seriously and didn’t train well for the fight. He didn’t prepare properly.

The world is filled with supremely talented and gifted men who underachieved simply because they didn’t put in the time and effort it took to accomplish big things. Among those men, sadly, are those God has called to do great things for His kingdom.

God has promised that He will give you everything you need to do the things He’s called you to do. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t plan and prepare for what lies ahead. In fact, God calls you to do just that.
