In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Mike Tyson was the most feared man in all of heavyweight professional boxing. But on February 11, 1990, a lightly regarded challenger named James “Buster” Douglas knocked out the then-undefeated (17-0) Tyson in the tenth round of a championship flight in Tokyo, Japan, to become world heavyweight champion.
Even the most casual sports enthusiasts still consider Douglas’s win over Tyson one of the greatest upsets in sports history. But boxing insiders have since stated that Tyson lost, in large part, because he didn’t take Douglas seriously and didn’t train well for the fight. He didn’t prepare properly.
