One day the LORD said to Moses, "Climb one of the mountains east of the river, and look out over the land I have given the people of Israel. After you have seen it, you will die like your brother, Aaron, for you both rebelled against my instructions in the wilderness of Zin. When the people of Israel rebelled, you failed to demonstrate my holiness to them at the waters." (These are the waters of Meribah at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) Numbers 27:12-14 NLT
Tragically, Moses wasn’t allowed to complete his appointed mission of leading the people of Israel into the Promised Land. That’s because, in a moment of frustration, he failed to obey a simple command God had given him.
The Israelites had complained that they were thirsty, so God told Moses to speak to a large rock, which would then miraculously send out a stream of water. But instead of speaking to the rock, Moses struck the rock with his shepherd’s staff-twice.
God still provided the water, but He told Moses, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them” (Numbers 20:12). So instead of entering the Promised Land with his people, Moses died…within eyesight of the land God had promised His people (Deuteronomy 34:5).
Obedience to God’s commands should be of the utmost importance for the man of God. That’s because God blesses those who follow His instructions and finish well for Him.
Prayer: Father, may my heart be committed to obeying You fully.
