The High Road of Forgiveness

Make allowance for each other's faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Colossians 3:13

We live in a time when it seems that even the slightest verbal barb or insult can start a war of words—on social media or through other forms of modern technology. The exchanges can be ugly, too; just think of the last time you read or heard of a “Twitter war” between two celebrities. One insult can start a seemingly endless string of messages, sometimes turning into a highly personal electronic game of “Can you top this?”

That’s just fallen human nature, isn’t it? In and of themselves, people aren’t prone to just “take the high road” and let insults and “cuts” go without responding in kind. But God tells His people that it should never be that way with you. He challenges you in His Word to choose forgiveness, even when someone has intentionally or maliciously caused you pain.

So the next time someone cuts you off in traffic, the next time someone carelessly speaks hurtful words, or the next time you’ve been offended because of something someone did, take the high road and forgive that person.

That’s the road God took when He extended forgiveness to you through His Son, Jesus Christ and it’s the same high road He wants you to take with those who have insulted or hurt you.
