And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all." Mark 9:35 NKJV

Released in August 1963, I Am the Greatest by Cassius Clay—better known in later years as Muhammad Ali—was a Grammy-nominated trash-talking album of spoken word poetry. The title track on the album proclaims, “This brash, young boxer is something to see. And the heavyweight championship is his destiny. This kid fights great. He’s go speed and endurance. But if you sign to fight him, increase your insurance.”

The boxing legend didn’t lack confidence.

Throughout history, many guys have tried to portray themselves as the most talented, most interesting, and most extraordinary men in the universe, but this isn’t the way to greatness.

Jesus’ disciples learned this lesson in Mark 9:33-35: “They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, ‘What were you arguing about on the road?’ But they kept quiet because on the way the had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said ‘Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.’”

The world may pay attention to men who call themselves great. Some men, like Ali, are actually great at what they do. But true greatness comes not from a man’s abilities or popularity; it comes from his service for God.

Prayer: Lord, keep me humble and help me serve well.
