But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. Luke 22:26-27 ESV
Jesus described leadership as a position from which we can serve others, not as one from which we demand respect and prestige. As you consider ways to steward the influence and power God has given you, think of the ways you can overturn the assumptions of today about greatness and power. If Jesus overturned the standards of His time for power, then His example may lead you to consider ways you can find to go last, to put others ahead of yourself, and to accept less than you think you deserve.
This is a tough exercise in humility that will cause you to rethink some assumptions about yourself and what your goals may be. It may feel like settling for less, but it’s really an opportunity to place others ahead of yourself. As challenging as this may be, it will free you from the pressure to fight for what you think you deserve and give you an increased awareness of the challenges your neighbors face. You may even become the kind of person others want to follow.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to let go of my illusions about myself so that I can serve others in freedom and humility.
