Hey,

i saw this trailer on youtube for a documentary called "the god who wasent there". It looks at the new testament and asks some very valid points. Im a christian and although i havent seen it i am going to if i can. After all, if my faith in God and christianity is true then i have nothing to worry about :shade: but i was wondering if anyone else had seen it or know anything about it so we can discuss the relavent points the dvd brings up.

Any ancient script

Hello there,

The one thing we have to be careful about when we read ancient scripture or indeed the autobiographical works of those whose actions we could never agree with is that passages can be extracted to positively or negatively influence our way of thinking. There is an underlying message in the Bible that even in this era of time we Christians accept and understand even though it was written to appeal to early Christians thousands of years ago. Sometimes the Bible is used by extremists to justify their actions, as is the Koran for the wicked minority who perpetrate appaliing deeds in the name of Islam. Those who read Mein Kampf by Hitler can almost see a logic (albeit twisted) for his actions against the Jews. There will always be those who use and mis use the Bible to justify a new angle or promote a new way of thinking.Thats why I am sceptical about "revealing" documentaries that question the fundamentals of our faith. The Evil one takes many forms but as long as we stand firm with Jesus we will never be swayed.God Bless,

Nicholas.

Good point Andrew.

Scourge, I suggest you stick witht he only valid source about GOD = the Holy Bible. For me, I don't care for any documenatary, movie, book or such that is anything but the Bible itself.

Hey, thanks for the speedy reply, i know you want me to ignore it, as do a lot of people ive asked but the more i think about it, i really need to know. If what i believe in is true and this documentary is a load of rubbish then i can leave it as that...however if it does have valid points and claims to back them up, i cannot ignore it. I remember when i was 14 (im 16 now) i went away from God because i did'nt see any evidence. When i asked "How do i know the Bible is true" all i got was "because the Bible says its true". Only through looking at everything and then having a real personal encounter with God did i come back to Christ. I guess what im trying to say is that im not the kind of person who will rule something out just because it dosent fit my way of thinking.

Anyway thanks again for the reply

Also, it says your from Yorkshire, thats cool, half my family are from Sheffield (i live in Lancashire )

Hi Scourge. In this world there is many voices. Still as a christian I chose to listen to the Bible, and my christian life became a much more easy walk. At a time I was searching to understand God with my intellect, to be able to explain Him in a way.
After living a while with Him, I do understand how important it is to feed myself with the word, and let it be the absolute truth in my life as a christian. The word will be a lamp to your feet: psalm 119.105
He will guide you in the most wonderful way if you will let Him. Of course it is ok to watch movies, documentarys and read books. My advice to you is to take the good things from them and let the things not in agreement with the Bible be far from you.
Jesus is the way, the only, absolute thruth and the life.
His love and blessings to you:star:

Hi there... i read your post and got a bit curious myself. I went to youtube and watched the trailer of this movie.

Now, to the end of the video it says that Jesus wasn't the only person to be born of a virgin and to rise from the dead. It said that these things have happened before. Now, i dare anyone, to come and present valid evidence that these things ever happened before or after Christ. I'm very curious about how the so called scientists that said these things validate them. Because these things never happened before. They are impossible acts. They only happened because God was at work.

Seeing this, i would advise you to be very careful in what you believe. Know that the most probable purpose of this movie is to earn money for it's makers by every means possible, not to show the 'truth' to the world as said in most trailers.

No it wasent talking about that, the documentary was talking about how that there were many mythical figures around that period of history that have similarities to Jesus like the virgin birth the rising from the dead.

Here's my take on this...
It's easy now to say that these things happened, like a virgin birth or rising from the dead, (or could have happened many times)... because it's 2000 years later. We know that many people rose from the dead because the Bible tells us that Jesus gave many people back their lives. Jesus had many signs and wonders, so much that Josephus, a Jewish scholar, called him a sorcerer.
However, many people claim things about Buddha now that cannot be proven. Many people call key figures in their religions gods or prophets of God, whether they are or not.
Here's some bit of proof on Jesus: The words He spoke, the miracles He performed, what He did--- was written about in the LIFETIME of eyewitnesses. Someone who was with the multitudes for the loaves and fishes miracle could say that Jesus did not feed everyone. Those who were standing around when Jesus said that He had never sinned could have spoken up and said, He never said that.
The New Testament was written by people who knew Jesus personally, or by people who knew the people (Luke wrote the books of Luke and Acts so that a friend of his, Theophilis or something like that, could know what he believed.) Check out the dates for when the books were written... some people believe that they were as early as within 20 years after Jesus died. Definitely some were written within 45 years. Eyewitnesses were still alive.
There are thousands of manuscripts of the New Testament. There are only a few of other things in history, but they are not discounted as being false. Even the Dead Sea Scrolls verify Isaiah 53, which is a prophecy about Jesus--- there is only one real difference from what we have today, which is the addition of one word, which doesn't change the meaning of the Scripture at all.
There is so much more that could be said, I did a bible study on this, the validation of Scripture... we do need to know what and why we believe... why we can trust the Bible to be God's word. Even if we never doubt it, someone may come to us who does, and we should be able to answer their questions.
"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect" 1 Peter 3:15

I do caution you to be wary of seeking answers from a source that claims it has 'new evidence'. There is nothing new under the sun. God has been revealed to us in Christ Jesus, God is not hidden. Jesus cautioned that the enemy would try to deceive us. Be on your guard with the Armor of God; Ephesians 6.
God bless
