The Encouragement Spur

Staff Member
Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Galatians 6:1

There’s a reason the Bible says, “Let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another” (Hebrews 10:25). Call it a gathering, assembly, fellowship, or church, but each word carries the idea that the Christian life should be lived in community. A church is filled with the battle-scarred, the newly trusting, and those who struggle to follow truth.

A church should be a place where you can experience mercy, expect grace, and from time to time deal with the darkness in the heart of all mankind.

God’s people are never asked to accept sin, but to lovingly hold a spiritual mirror to the bad behavior of believers who are caught up in sin. This isn’t an “I’m better than you” moment. It’s a “God is better than all” revelation. God can use you to restore someone to righteous living, but you can’t treat this lightly because you’re also told these situations can bring personal temptation to follow the poor choices of those you’re called to restore.

God didn’t call believers to meet together so they could find out how much others thought they could get away with, but to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24).
