Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later; 6 but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.
7 Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says,
“Today if you hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me,
As in the day of trial in the wilderness,
9 Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me,
And saw My works for forty years.
10 “Therefore I was angry with this generation,
And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart,
And they did not know My ways’;
11 As I swore in My wrath,
‘They shall not enter My rest.’”
12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end. (Hebrews 3:5-14 NASB1995)
Faith in Jesus Christ is not something we do once and now we are good to go to heaven, but regardless of how we live. This faith, which comes from God, and which is persuaded of God, and which is gifted to us by God, and which is not of our own doing, results in us dying with Christ to sin and walking in obedience to his commands, or it is not biblical faith. And this is not claiming that we will be absolutely perfect or that we will never sin again, but the old life must be put to death so that we can be reborn to now live the new life.
And this faith does not come from our own flesh, but it is persuaded of God as to his holiness and righteousness, and of our sinfulness, and of our need to die with Christ to sin and to now live for him in walks of obedience to his commands. So faith is something we live day by day in obedience to our Lord and in the forsaking of our sins. And our salvation is something that must be lived out in our lives day by day, for we were rescued from our slavery to sin so that we will now serve the Lord with our lives forever.
[Romans 8:24; Romans 13:11; 1 Corinthians 1:18; 1 Corinthians 15:1-2; Philippians 2:12-13; 2 Timothy 1:8-9; Hebrews 9:28; 1 Peter 1:5,9]
So we are His house, his body, the body of Christ, the church, the people of faith in our Lord who have died with him to sin and who are now following our Lord in walks of surrender to him in obedience to his commands in holy living. But we must remain in him and in his word, steadfast in faith, in walks of obedience to his commands, until the day that we die, or until Jesus returns to take his faithful ones to be with him for eternity, if we are to have salvation from sin and eternal life with God.
And again, this is not speaking of absolute sinless perfection, or to say that we will not ever fail and have need to be revived. But the Scriptures (noted above) teach that if sin is our practice, and not obedience to God, we will not have salvation from sin, and we will not inherit eternal life with God.
Thus, we have this warning against allowing our hearts to be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness, which is why we are instructed in Hebrews 10:23-25 and in Hebrews 3:12-14 that we must be encouraging and exhorting one another daily so that none of us will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ IF we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end. And this has to be biblical assurance based on biblical faith which results in death to sin and walks of obedience to God.
And here we can cross reference over to 1 Corinthians 10:1-22 where we are taught about the Israelites, how the majority of them during their time in the wilderness chose to continue in their sinful practices rather than to obey God, and so they were killed in the wilderness, they died in their sins, and they did not get to enter into God’s eternal rest because of their disobedience, which God calls unbelief. And they are an example to us as to how we are not to live so that we do not receive the same punishment.
So, do not accept a gospel message which is teaching you that once you have confessed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of your life that all your sins are forgiven and heaven is now guaranteed you for eternity, but regardless of how you live from that moment forward. For if we claim to know God and to be in fellowship with him, but while we still walk (in conduct, in practice) in sin, and while obedience to our Lord is not what we practice, the Scriptures teach that we will not inherit eternal life with God.

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” Acts 16:25 NIV ‘84
Lord, I praise You forevermore.
You, my Savior, I now adore.
Hope in heaven awaiting me,
Because You died at Calvary.
I have been forgiven,
And I’m bound for heaven.
Jesus set me free from
All my sin, I say.
I will praise Him always!
Lord, I love You for all You’ve done:
Overcame death, my vict’ry won!
Jesus saved me, and now I’m free!
I rejoice in His love for me.
I will walk in vict’ry!
My sin is but hist’ry!
I am free to please Him
With my life today.
I will love Him always!
Lord, I thank You for giving me
A new life bought at Calvary.
Loving Jesus, I meet with Him.
Tender mercies now flow within.
Lord, I am so thankful;
Through my Lord, I’m able
To sit at His table;
Fellowship with Him.
I will thank Him always!
