The Contract

The LORD replied, "Listen, I am making a covenant with you in the presence of all your people. I will perform miracles that have never been performed anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the LORD--the awesome power I will display for you. Exodus 34:10 NLT

God gave the people of Israel a contract. The contract (covenant) described what He expected from the people and what they could expect from Him. It explained conditions and offered guidance on improving relationships with the God who created the contract.

If there was ever a breach of contract, it could be found among the people who were given the contract—not with the God who gave it. This contract wasn’t a backroom deal with loopholes and provisions favorable to few. This was a life contract for all-guaranteed by God.

Jesus offered a new contract when He paid the penalty for your sin. Actually, it was more like an amendment to the original contract. It offered greater protections for you and incredible restoration of relationship with God when you fail to live up to the letter of the original contract.

The bible is the source of God’s covenant with you. It makes sense to read what it says and do what it commands. When you find yourself in breach of contract with God, remember that it’s Jesus who defends and restores you.

Prayer: God, it’s good to know what You expect from me. It’s good to know what I can expect from You. And when I don’t live up to Your standards, You have provisions for that too.
