The Book Of Life #213 - December 03, 2006
This season of the year is quite commercial, isn't it? One might think that we are throwing a big party on December 25th. Well, we are! But the honored guest, Jesus Christ, has not been invited. At least that's how it was for me! When I was fifteen or sixteen, my folks asked me to pray before the holiday meal. The table was spread with turkey and all the trimmings. After thanking God for the food, I asked God to show us the real meaning of the holiday. It was seven or eight years later when God answered that prayer. I was with the Army in Korea very far fom home. One day I visited our local chaplain. He asked me why I had come to talk with him. I told him I really didn't know; which was true. The very next thing the chaplain asked was this, "Have you ever accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?" I thought to myself, "I'd better tell this fellow the truth." So I answered, "No." Then the chaplain took out a little New Testament and began to show me some things I had never seen before. He showed me that the Bible declares I'm a sinner. Well, I didn't have any trouble with that. I knew what I was like. But then he also showed me that Christ died on the cross to pay for the sins of people like me. He showed me that to those, who bow before Christ and who trust in His sacrifice as the only adequate payment for sin, God gives the free gift of eternal life. It was at this time that I really became a Christian. This is why Christ came into the world. He brings the best gift of all, forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Yes, God gave me a new start on life. He gave me the promise of heaven to come. I found that my name was written in the Book of Life. What better gift can a person receive?
