Simon, to whom He gave the name Peter; James the [son] of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, "Sons of Thunder"; Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the [son] of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Cananite; and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. And they went into a house. Mark 3:16-19
To betray is to reveal information about a friend or companion to someone who is their enemy. Jesus had twelve disciples, but only one was defined as a "betrayer." Judas betrayed Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. He severed his relationship with Jesus and the disciples, and separated himself from trust.
There is a reason you appreciate people who can be trusted. They're more likely to give honest answers. They keep private conversations quiet. They know that betrayal removes and shred of trust. Those who can be trusted are remembered for their integrity and kindness. Those who can't be trusted are usually remembered for their lack of integrity and mercy.
You've probably met both kinds of people. Jesus did too.
Prayer: Lord, help me see the act of betrayal the way You do. Help me remember that to betray means to be separated from friends, to make enemies, and to render it much harder to make friends. To betray means that I'm not obeying You. Help me follow Your instructions. Help me remember You're my friend.
