1 Thessalonians is written to a young church and describes the matters we must take care of in relation to our relationship with God and also our relationship with other believers and the church.
1 Thessalonians describes how to become model believers.
1 Thess 1:2 We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. 3 We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
- work out of faith, labor out of love, and endure out of hope in the Lord's return.
1 Thess 1:6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. 7 And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.
- As well as pursuing Christ from private bible study etc, find a godly person eg pastor, to imitate and welcome their message (vs 6) - there is nothing wrong with imitating men who are imitating Christ.
- Rely on the joy of the Holy Spirit in the midst of suffering (vs 6).
- Turn from all idols and serve the living God (vs 9)
- Expect and look forward the return of Christ (vs 10)
11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.
- live lives worthy of God, and strive to enter His kingdom and glory
1 Thess2:3 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.
- Be teachable, receive the teaching of the apostles as not human words but God's Word:
2:14 For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews
- become imitators of more mature churches and endure suffering
Chapter 3- 5 contain further instructions, such as encouraging and building each other up, praying, rejoicing , thanking always, living in peace, and keeping watch for Christ's return.
1 Thessalonians is basically a complete guide for believers starting or recently starting in the Christian life.
