The Band-Aid Approach
By: Barbara Sybil 9-30-08
When we are hurt physically, scrap our knee, shins, elbows or cut our finger we sometimes reach for a band-aid to put on the wound. The size of the wound will determine the size of the band-aid and, or the treatment needed.
Well, when our heart and soul get wounded we sometimes try to deal with the hurt in the same way. We try to put a band-aid on the pain telling others we are fine.
Just like with a flesh wound the band-aid may need to be replaced or further treatment may be needed. But left untreated, it could become infected causing more pain or infection in the long run.
When we are emotionally hurt our band-aids are there to hide the hurt and bury it, and not to deal with the hurt. Some find themselves working more to keep their minds distracted. Others turn to drinking and some to drugs. At first, it may seem to help and work but the longer it goes untreated and not dealt with, the more work we find ourselves doing. The few drinks of alcohol increase and so will the amount of drugs one needs, rather it is painkillers or something stronger, anything that will numb the pain. Just like novocaine, this kind of treatment will wear off, leaving us needing even more and more.
What our heart and soul needs just like for a deep cut is a physician’s touch. The great physician we have is Jesus Christ whether someone has received Him or not, as their personal Saviour. He knows our pain and what it will take to mend the wound. Whatever treatment we choose to use for a band-aid fix, if the wound is left untreated, it will continue to fester causing more of an infection than if we had dealt with the pain at first.
Recovery can only begin when we acknowledge the wound and the need for help beyond the band-aid treatment. Then and only then can the healing begin. But just like a band-aid on the skin can hurt initially when it is taken off as it pulls on the skin, so can the emotional pain when we stop using work, alcohol or drugs to numb the pain. Once the healing has taken place only a scar of what was, remains.
It is because we love that we can become so emotionally hurt. But to not love would mean that we are not really living.
