tattoos??

I have read through 90% of this post, trying to understand why so many of the people that are replying are using biblical text literally. I have my ears pierced, there is nothing wrong with that. God wouldn't give us the ability to pierce our ears or wear earrings if it was bad or wrong. Getting a tattoo isn't wrong either. Why in the world would God give man the ability to do tattoos if it were wrong? I mean, if it were, why do we color our hair? Or color our nails? Or shave? Or put on makeup? As someone who has been "raised in the church" and as a 17 year old I feel like I have a different insight than most adults. I think that most of you are over the age of 21, I don't know, but my point is is that you shouldn't take it literally. I saw that someone said that "It's has Pagan roots", if that is so, that doesn't mean that it's right. The Pagans weren't the only ones that had tattooing. Egyptians did it as well. If I get a cross tattooed on my back, I am by the way, or if I tattoo my late Grandfather's name on my rib cage, I am doing that as well, it isn't something that is seen to be bad. Now, if I get a naked man on my back or anywhere on my body, then yeah, that's not right. But even in some cases, it's art. The human body is art. God made it and it is beautiful. If a teenager is reading this post, if you chose to get a tattoo make sure that you're doing it for all the right reasons, and nothing you would be ashamed of. And just so you know, Leviticus was the OLD Testament. I would think that because we are in the world we live in, it would be better to focus on the New Testament, though the Old Testament has its uses. However, the Old Testament is just a foreshadow of what is to come in the future. I know that I will most likely get a lot of backlash from folks, but I feel like I'm right. I feel like you should open up your minds. Getting a tattoo won't send you to hell.

Whether or not tattoos are wrong is another issue, but just because we have the ability to do something doesn't make it right.
We have the ability to lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery, murder, molest children, etc...

Is the God of the old testament a different God from the new testament? Did he have a personality change somewhere?

I didn't suggest that you totally ignore the Old Testament, I'm saying do not focus on it. Do not take it literally in today's time because it was for a group of people. A certain group of people. Instructions for the Jews in Israel. The New Testament is for us. We are post Christ.

I am nearly 100% sure God isn't going to have all that have tattoos be damned to hell. What makes a tattoo so wrong? Why isn't it right? If you can give me a legitimate argument/reason I will. And, as I mentioned before, God makes it possible for us to create things like tattooing and piercing. Why would he allow it if it weren't right? If it was wrong in his eyes, why would he give man the knowledge? Does that make sense?

Just because God gives us the ability to do something does not make it right. We have the ability to worship Satan. Does that make it right? We have the ability to commit fornication. Does that mean it is Ok? I think your reasoning is a little off.
If you are getting a tattoo on your back, doesn't that mean you are going to take your shirt off.

You will have to show some of your body. Same as with the rib cage. We are not to show our nakedness, we are to be modest.

May you grow in the knowledge and grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and may your understanding be opened,

By the way, I am under 21.

If you read in Genesis it says that by eating of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, as Adam and Eve did, their eyes were opened. God never created man with that knowledge in the beginning.

Also why would we ditch the O.T. when Jesus said that not one jot or tittle would fail, until all was fulfilled. I am not saying we are under the law. That part was fulfilled by Jesus, But to not take it literally is very dangerous. How do you know when and where you should believe it was a literal command? Are we not going to believe the prophecies of Jesus were literally fulfilled? Are the prophecies of the end days found in Isaiah and other books not going to come to pass because we are post Christ. '

If in theory we were to only to follow the N.T. what would we find about tattoos? Well it says in 1 John that we are not to love the world, nor the things that are in the world. If we love the world then the love of the Father is not in us. These things are of the world; The lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. Do you not think, dear Imdani, that getting a tattoo is either for the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, or the pride of life?

It is a person's choice whether or not they want to get a tattoo or not. You can't force your beliefs on them. I personally love tattoos and piercings too. A lot of people who are Christians say that it is wrong to tattoo, cut, or pierce yourself. We're all going to have different interests and people need to learn to respect that. In my honest opinion there are worse things out there than tattoos. For example: Murder, abuse, rape, bullying, and many other things.

Also, a lot of you might disagree with me on this but I found this interesting quote in a book I read. It might get you thinking, maybe.
“Sin is a matter of opinion. Sins are only sins if you are hurting other people.”-Corey Taylor.

Anyways...Thats all I have to say on this whole topic, bye!

It doesn't matter what is in any book but one...The Holy Bible

Sin is sin when God says it is sin, not Corey Taylor.

May I ask you? How is it dangerous? I don't see how this is dangerous....You may think it is but I don't. It is not harming me or others. The Holy Bible is not only the true word of God. Personally I don't think it is. You shouldn't worry about sins like tattoos, unless it is hurting you or others. I believe that it is only a sin if it is hurting anybody. You can disagree with me all you want, but don't try to tell me what right or wrong. I know what it is right. I am not hurting anybody with this qoute, or by getting tattoos.

Amen to that Brother!

The context of this verse is about whether or not we should eat meat, or drink. In other words we are speaking of the normal things in life.
Romans 14:20-22 "It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.
Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin."

Sins toward man are clearly things that put other men out of the way of God, or stumble them. I naturally do not eat pork, however: if I were to go to a country where eating pork was very common, and was served it, and the host would be offended, I would be sinning. My qualms about consuming pork take precedents over loving for them. Likewise if I were to enter a Muslim country and continue eating pork that would offend them. It is the same with drinking wine, and entering into any other form of entertainment or pleasures. Does piercing our ears, tattooing our bodies, coloring our hair, or putting on a general air of worldliness cause others to not take our God seriously. Does it cause them to sin? I know a girl who would like to get a nose piercing, yet because she works with Mennonites, she will not get it, because they will not take her seriously, and will view her as worldly. She is not in rebellion saying,"I can do whatever I want to. I am not under the law, but under grace." She is showing greater love for others, than for herself.

"All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful unto me, but all things edify not." Romans 10:23

Dear CuddleBunny282,

If you do not believe that the Bible is the true word of God, then what assurance and hope can you have? If you do not believe that what it says is true and correct, then whatever we say, myself and the other forum members, is worth no value. We come down to relativism. And if all things are relative, then we are all groping in the dark. We will not know what is right and wrong. I may say that torturing little children is right. You may say it is wrong, but with no absolutes, who is to judge me.

I have doubted the truth of the Bible, not denying its truth, but questioning its validity, authenticity. Is everthing in it to be trusted? Can I trust the God of the Bible and Jesus the Son of God to really save me from my sins. I looked at everything that can be proved in this life, and have found that it is absolutely trustworthy. The concept of sowing and reaping found in Galations 6:7-8 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap everlasting life." IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE!
In my own life I have sown in various ways. I have been mean and reaped meaness. I have sown unforgiveness, and reaped unforgivess. "For if you forgive men their tresspasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you forgive not men their tresspasses, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your tresspasses." Matthew 6:14-15
There are many other ways that I have been full convinced that what I have read in the holy Scriptures is indeed life giving and true. I have found it in creation, the heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the works of His hands: day after day they pour forth speach, night after night they reveal knowledge. I have found proof in my own inner man. Jesus has given me peace and changed my life. Not the physical things-I still live in the same place with the same trials to bear-but the difference is that I have hope and assurance and the ability to overcome my struggles, and not be overtaken with anger or hatred when others hurt me, or when things go wrong. I praise the name of Jesus for opening my eyes to His glorious truth and salvation! Let His name be great among the nations, for it has the power to conquer sin and death!

Umm...I have plenty of hope. I don't believe in everything in the Bible, just some things. You can have hope and assurance without being a Christian, yes it is possible. You can't say that I don't have that if I'm not a Christian. And it is very easy for me to know what is right or wrong. I know that murder, rape, forcing you beliefs on people, torture, abuse any form, is not right. I believe that it is only a sin if you're hurting other people. People tattooing, getting piercings isn't. I love tattoos, and if someone told me that to be a Christian you must not do that, then that makes me feel very ashamed of myself. Its almost like telling me that I can't do something that I love doing. I have different beliefs and opinions about things, and I prefer it if people would respect that.

First of all I am not saying that it is a sin to get a tattoo. What I will say is that to love the world, or the things that are in the world is sin. Check 1 John 2:15-17.

Secondly, it is very dangerous to pick and choose what we want to believe out of the Bible. If there are areas that you doubt, you should seek the Lord to convince you of all truth. At times I have doubted certain things, but after praying and asking God to give me the faith to believe what He has said, He has convinced me-in areas that I cannot see i.e. spiritual things He has witnessed to my spirit, and in things that I can touch or see, such as the creation of the world, He has shown me living proof.

Lastly, if you cannot believe that all the Scriptures are true, then how do you know that the sins you mentioned are really truely sins.

Do you see what I am saying. I hope you don't feel I am condemning you.

Love in Christ,
anya

It is not dangerous to me. I live a very happy life. You may say that it is dangerous, but I disagree with you. I am not a Christian really. I believe things from almost all different religions. If you think that is dangerous, then go ahead and think that. Just remember that it is not dangerous for me. It isn't affecting me in anyway. Also, just because I don't believe all scriptures are true, it doesn't mean I don't think that these are not truly sins. But really? No offense or anything, but how can you not call them sins? Can a person be really that stupid that they can't tell if it is or not? I've said it before and I will say it again: Sin to me is a matter of opinion. I only consider something a sin if it is actually hurting other people. I choose not to argue with you anymore. I feel that I am repeating myself. heh heh. But yeah, I can't consider myself a real Christian, because I don't believe in everything in the Bible. Anyways, I just hope that you see what I'm trying to get at. Have a good night.

Greetings @CuddleBunny282

I just read you profile, then this post and I see you are not a Christian.

The Lord Jesus Christ, will accept you just the way you are, whether or not you have tattoos
Your life and soul is precious to Him and He died to save you
Praying CuddleBunny that you will find the Lord Jesus as your Saviour...and that He will reveal the total truth of His word to you

What @anya is saying is absolutely right for a Christian as the joy of knowing the Lord and the love and peace He gives far outweighs anything this world can offer.

Bless you

Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on Me hath everlasting life
John 6:47

My point was not the tattoos....my point was putting anybody or anything over God is dangerous. You are hurting someone, yourself. If you do not believe the Bible is the true Word of God how do you know truth? Jesus said He came to bring truth and that the Word is truth.

God is the creator, He sets the standards, not me, you, Corey Taylor or anyone else and God gave us those standards in a book...The Holy Bible

I'd like to just share my thoughts not to offend but a smart person looks at both sides of a coin to determine its true value.
i myself have wanted a tattoo or two.i have many friends with them and to honest the artists are in some cases quite talented .what a gift to draw and paint. I know the word speaks of a mark that one day many will have to take in order to buy ,sell ,eat or do any thing ( the mark of the beast ) now many say its one thing or the other ( spiritual flies) .. Here's what I know .the enemy likes to boil us one degree at a time so we never see it happen ..tattoos get us so used to the idea of a mark on us we won't think twice about one more mark...! All the temp tattoos the younger kids are wearing ( kindergarden on up )has got them so used to the idea the generation behind me will welcome the mark with open arms .its quite scary when you look at it all ..I will never condemn one nor condone it .its between you and God , just rember adult decisions have ADULT consequences...In Jesus Name ...Rev. Think on this maybe .if the peers around you or the media you read and watch didn't have tattoos n them .....Would you have still considered it in the First place. Philippians 4:8 what ever is pure , honest and of good report .if there be any virtue , honor or praise think on these things..!

I wasn't talking about the tattoos at first. I am not actually a Christian if you take a look at my profile. I believe in many different things.

The OP ask about tattoos . You say you believe in many things but all the knowledge in the world is to no avail if it dosent bring you to a point of decision .if that doesn't happen you will be blown around by all you've learned pulled for one thought to the others ..Choose you this day whom shall you serve ...Rev

Listen, I will make this nice and clear. I am happy where I am at today. My beliefs, what I believe in, have made me a better person. No one, tells me that I should make a decision. I don't have to. So, please I will ask very kindly, and that goes to anyone who reads this. Please do not tell me that I need to make a decision, my choices are wrong, and that God is the only way. You can be very happy and not believe in God. I believe in some sort of higher power, but you know what? I don't worship him/her.
