What does the Bible mean with the word suffering?

I think I have a pretty good idea of the definition for our lives, but this word can also be very intimidating for new believers or those who are not yet saved. The Bible says that when we decide to walk with the Lord, we are walking through the narrow gates and our lives will be filled with suffering. Now, I believe this means suffering for Him... correct?

In my life if I were to define suffering it would be failing my classes, or failing a test, getting in a car accident, breaking my leg, growing up and becoming an old maid with no friends or family or job.

But I don't think that's what the Bible means by suffering. To me the Biblical definition of suffering means suffering for my faith. Like some people may not like me because I'm christian. Some people judge me because I'm christian. Some make fun of things I do out of kindness to help others. And to some people (not to me), suffering may mean not being able to live of this world- i.e. watch certain movies, listen to certain music, go to parties...that type of thing. This type of suffering seems to me to be the biblical definition of suffering... but correct me if I am wrong...

There is happiness in a Christian's life; in fact the Christian life is the happiest one you can find. God supplies all our happiness... He is our happiness. The suffering that occurs is suffering from this fallen world, right?

Thanks,
Audrey

Primarily it means 'persecution' Jesus was persecuted and so will His disciples. Us. But only if we choose to follow Him.
By this I mean...Not everybody that takes the title 'Christian' will follow Him. Some only buy the fire insurance, and leave out the adventure tour.
