Stay on the Narrow Path

Then this message came to Isaiah from the LORD: "Go back to Hezekiah and tell him, 'This is what the LORD, the God of your ancestor David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears. I will add fifteen years to your life, Isaiah 38:4-5 NLT

On average, the length of a man’s life in the United States is between seventy-five and seventy-six years of age, depending on which study you believe. Second Chronicles 29:1 says, “Hezekiah became king [when he was] twenty-five years old, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem…” So he would have been just thirty-nine years old when he got sick and nearly died. But he asked God for more time and receive it.

In his commentary, Albert Barnes says this: “If the desire be to do good; to advance the kingdom of God; to benefit others; or to perfect some plan of benevolence which is begun, it is not improper to pray that God would prolong the life.”

In addition to today’s passage being an encouraging one about answered prayer, it’s also a great reminder to stay on the narrow path as you advance in years. As you get older, what is your focus? Is your heart growing fonder about God’s kingdom or is it growing colder? It it’s the latter, than fan the flames.

Prayer: Lord, use however long I have left on this earth to advance Your kingdom.
