St. Patrick’s Day

Staff Member
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!" Isaiah 52:7

St. Patrick’s Day began as a Catholic feast day to honor the life of St. Patrick who brought Christianity to Ireland in the AD 400s. It’s chiefly celebrated by the Irish and Irish immigrants, but has become very popular with the general populace of many countries. It’s widely known for its parades, festivals, the wearing green, the display of shamrocks, and the drinking of alcohol.

These days, many criticize St. Patrick’s Day celebrations for their commercialism, for promoting negative stereotypes of Irish culture, and for encouraging drunkenness. Almost forgotten amongst the endless greenery, leprechaun costumes, and mugs of frothy beer is the fact that this day was intended to commemorate an outstanding missionary.

Jesus commanded His disciples, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). Elsewhere He said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19).

There is till a great deal of missionary work to be done in the world today—often right in your own neighborhood. People from all over the world—who have never heard the Gospel—have immigrated to North America. Help bring them eternal hope.
