The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, But the mouth of the wicked [what is] perverse. Proverbs 10:32 NKJV
Transformation alters the way you speak. Rude comments begin to fade. Kind words? Newly spoken by a tongue ill-used to forming the sounds of decency. Where it was once easy to speak profane words, those same words begin to sound unnatural and leave you feeling oddly uncomfortable. Bitter stories are countered with reminders of God’s forgiveness. You might even surprise yourself.
Does this mean you will never slip and say something you regret? No. Words leading to remorse will also be spoken. They land on the floor of conversation like dead men’s bones. You may discover that your word choices will change because they no longer fit with new-life living.
Spiritual speech patterns help identify you as someone who represents Jesus, the Change Maker. Your new language isn’t a matter for pride. It’s one more identifying mark that Jesus is changing more than your eternal destination.
You can use your words to be critical, dishonest, or hateful. Much different words convince others that you love Jesus and that His love has real power to change lives.
Prayer: Dear God, sometimes I think my words don’t really matter. Sometimes I think I can separate my life with You and the life I live among other humans. You never did. May my mouth reflect the change You’re making in me.
