So that you "may know" you have eternal life.

1 Jn 5:13; These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

These things I have written... what things? What did he write?

If we go through the book of first John, what things did John write to Christians... that they may know... they have eternal life?

1 Jn 1:6; If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;
1 Jn 1:7; but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.

This is really about repentance. We have to quit living in sin and darkness, and start living in righteousness and the light.

1 Jn 1:8; If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
1 Jn 1:9; If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 Jn 1:10; If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.

We have to confess our sins. We have to realize that no matter how "good" we think we are, it's not good enough.

1 Jn 2:4; The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
1 Jn 2:5; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him:
1 Jn 2:6; the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.

We have to keep the commandments. If you don't and you say you're a Christian.. you're a liar. Plain and simple.
We are supposed to walk in the same manner Jesus walked. We are supposed to act and live like Jesus did.

1 Jn 2:15; Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1 Jn 2:16; For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
1 Jn 2:17; The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

We can't love "the world" more than we love God. If you love the world... the love of the Father is not in you. Plain and simple.
The one who does the will of God... lives forever. You have to be obedient to God.

1 Jn 2:22; Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.
1 Jn 2:23; Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.

You have to believe that Jesus is the Christ. That He is God made manifest among men. Anyone who denies does not have God, plain and simple.

1 Jn 2:26; These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you.

1 Jn 2:29; If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.

In order to be born of God, born from above, born again.... you have to practice righteousness.

.... to be continued ...
1 Jn 3:4; Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
1 Jn 3:5; You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.
1 Jn 3:6; No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him.
1 Jn 3:7; Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous;
1 Jn 3:8; the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.
1 Jn 3:9; No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
1 Jn 3:10; By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.

You cannot practice lawlessness. What is lawlessness? Anything that opposes the law, in particular the commandments.
You cannot practice sin. You must practice righteousness. People who practice sin, are of the devil. Plain and simple.
Notice how many times the word "practice" appears in the verses above. I like this, if doesn't say if you've ever made a mistake, or ever sinned since you became a Christian.
It says if you "practice" sin or "practice" unrighteousness, or do not "practice" righteousness.. you are not of God. Plain and simple.

1 Jn 3:11; For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another;
1 Jn 3:14; We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.
1 Jn 3:15; Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
1 Jn 3:18; Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.

We have to love one another. We can't simply "say" we love other people. But we need to show it, put it into action, "in deed and truth". Plain and simple.

1 Jn 3:23; This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.
1 Jn 3:24; The one who keeps His commandments abides in Christ, and Christ in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

We HAVE to, "have to".. love one another. We must. We have to keep these commandments. IF.. "if" we keep His commandments, He will abide in us.
If we don't keep them, there is no promise that He will abide in us. Plain and simple.

1 Jn 4:1; Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
1 Jn 4:2; By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;
1 Jn 4:3; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world.

You have to believe that Jesus is God in the flesh. You have to believe that He was resurrected "in the flesh". Any spirit that doesn't confess is not from God. Plain and simple.

1 Jn 4:15; Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

... to be continued ....
I counted at least a half dozen place in 1st John that we have to love one another.

1 Jn 4:20; If someone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.
1 Jn 4:21; And this commandment we have from Him, that the one who loves God should love his brother also.

If you don't love your Christian brothers and sisters, you cannot love God. Plain and simple.

1 Jn 5:2; By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.
1 Jn 5:3; For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.

1 Jn 5:13; These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

John wrote all of these things, so they we could "know" we have eternal life. If you are having problems with doing these things, if you are not doing these things....
you can also use these verses to "know" that you DON'T have eternal life. ( also see Luke 18:18-20; )

1 Jn 5:18; We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.

There are people who believe demons can physically harm, and inhabit Christians, but this verse is one of several that says "the evil one does not touch" them.

After all of this, John ends this letter with one final warning.

1 Jn 5:21; Little children, guard yourselves from idols.
