Simple Steps to Overcoming Sin

Simple Steps to Overcoming Sin

Open your eyes
In a world full of evil, the Christian in tune with God’s WORD easily takes a glance at the global scene and perceives a world saturated with sin. However his or her disgust with sin is not simply relegated to pointing the finger at the world; this disgust extends to oneself. The scriptures remind us that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. In 1st John we are told that if we state that we have not sinned, we deceived ourselves, but if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Realize you need help
These words of encouragement seem sweet in the moment; however anyone trying to live the Christian life can attest that this is not a bed of Roses. For Christians our struggle is against sin; we struggle against the sin from self, the sin of the world, and the sin that comes through the thoughts of the devil. Personally I’ve been down this road and I’m still walking on it. It seems that no matter how hard we try, eventually we fall again into sin. The apostle Paul most certainly felt the same way when he cried out, “Old wretched man that I am, who can save me from this body of sin”. We too like Paul need to realize our wretchedness and our need for Jesus, the only one who conquered sin on our behalf.

Steps one, two and three
When it comes to battling sin, here are some practical steps that work. One, don’t take on sin head on, especially sexual sin, the Bible tells us to flee sin. Remember pride comes before the fall; confidence in the flesh leads to a broken heart. Instead of putting yourself in the path of temptation, flee, turn the other way.
Secondly, do not simply make a stance to reject sin, go beyond that and replace it. We sin because there is often a legitimate need that we are trying to meet in an illegitimate way that is not kosher with the will of God. Remember when Jesus talked about the person who had the demons cast out from them who did not replace the emptiness with the Holy Spirit? The demons came back stronger. So for example, the person struggling with pornography may have more success against defeating the demon of lust if the leave their computer and fellowship with friends, instead of simply telling themselves they are rejecting sin.
Finally, refuse to feel guilty. This might seem counter-intuitive, but there is a difference between conviction and condemnation. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and lets us know that we are doing something wrong, encouraging us to change. The devils condemns us of sin, telling us we are worthless and that we are going to hell. Conviction seeks to remind you of your worth and encourages you to change; condemnation seeks to make you feel worthless and in a state of hopelessness. Refuse to feel guilty after you fall into sin. Simply confess your sins, turn away from sin and receive God’s grace and forgiveness through Jesus.

In summary, we’ve presented three practical way to overcoming sin daily. This is a daily walk! One, don’t fight sin, flee sin. Two, don’t simply reject it, replace it with something better. And finally, refuse to feel guilty for as Paul tells us in Romans, there is now no more condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit.

Love you and God Bless
