LORD, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don't concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp. Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother's milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me. Psalm 131:1-2
Today’s psalm reminds you that God nurtures and cares for you the way that a mother cares for her child. Perhaps you have a “tough love” picture of the Lord—you see Him as a God who demands much of you.
If you make the mistake of seeing Him this way, you may well become proud of your holiness, your commitment to Him, or your spiritual accomplishments. You may attempt to master “great matters” that distinguish you from others. The pride that comes with performing for God inevitably results in haughty glances at others. You imagine that they either don’t measure up or are a threat to your own pursuit of false holiness.
However, if you see God as infinitely loving like a mother caring for a child, you can respond to Him with silence and rest. Your striving may cease, and you can truly trust in His protection and acceptance.
Then you can move into your days knowing the Lord’s love that silences your doubts and striving. You will be humble and care for others since you have nothing to prove or to guard.
