What are Satan's powers? I was reading another forum where people were saying that Satan was the cause of some poverty and illness. I had never heard this before. With that train of thought, I'm not sure how you would decide if an illness was caused by God or Satan.

I don't think Satan has that much power, but perhaps I'm wrong? Please back up any comments with scripture.

Hi Tawnde, nice to meet you.

What are Satan's powers? Good question.

He is called 'the prince and power of the air (Eph 2:2)', 'the god of this world (2 Cor 4:4) - and it's said that he blinded the minds of them which believe not'.

He gave power, a throne and authority to the beast (Rev 13:2)

He offered Jesus authority over all the nations of the world (Lk 4:5-6)

Concerning illness he bound this woman. (Lk 13:16)

Also concerning illness consider Job. Satan was given authority by god to afflict him severely, only sparing his life. (Job 2:6-8)

Many of the devils that Jesus cast out were causing the one they possessed a great deal of trouble. Consider the man who ran around unclothed in the graveyard. Satan has rule over the devils.

We ourselves must battle with him and his minions. (Eph 6:12)

-----------------

Sickness by God. There is a question about the blind man in the gospels who the disciples asked whose sin made him blind. Jesus answered that nobodies but he was made blind so that the power of God could be seen in him. Did God make him blind or did God just allow Satan to?

Anyway you look at it God has power over all sickness. He is sovereign over every thing. My personal opinion is that God causes no sickness but does allow Satan to inflict people.

Have a terrific day

How about a answer in words of today.

To begin with God does not cause any sickness, sin or anything bad.
He does and will allow it, for his own reasons, but he does not cause it.

Sickness, birth defects, sin, and all these things are a result of Satan and sin. So Satan has great power, and he is sneaky. But when Satan himself with his own free will decided to overthrow God and sin entered the world he was given free access to challenge all of humanity to see what we,, you, I will do with this free will ourselves. So we have the choice to follow the ways of God or not.

The fact that we cannot follow all things perfectly and the fact that we will fall and stumble around, was taken into consideration by God so he gave the life of his son for us to obtain salvation. And the holy spirit is our teacher. So if we do fall we learn not to fall again. It is an ongoing process.

So sickness and disease and thorns on bushes are a result of sin and the fact the creation is full of sin.

War and poverty and many things such as these. The world does not wish to follow God, so instead of helping each other, such as developing better ways of agriculture and using the ways of science given to us by God, they get into some fuss over this or that, and a war is started and poverty is a result.

Our own government and country allows great poverty and degrading social programs due to our own wish to be greedy, and to not follow the simple moral rules God has set , so government also becomes a reflection of us, the people, and more and more it is staffed by those who desire the things of Satan such as greed, self gratification, pride, stealing, using all things for self benefit, instead of helping. Many things you see are a result of Satan and his influence on all.

Satan is very sneaky, and I think this is why God shows him as a snake in the beginning, as snakes hide in the grass and slither along.

All the bad things in this world are the work of Satan. From a simple lie you might tell to someone , even a little white lie is the Temptation of Satan. To huge nation changing wars, are all the work of Satan, as he convinces all to do this or that and fuss and fight .

Now some wars are allowed by God, but are so allowed simply because he will use us, to take out those who are buried in sin.
And any war does result in poverty, killing, financial stress and strain, but the bottom line is if all would follow some very simple moral rules, none of it would be required. But as Satan is here to test all, to challenge free will, the result is what you see in the world of today.

Not from scripture, rarely do I quote that, I read it a lot, but I just speak from the heart mostly.

I look at our world today and I do not like it at all. But I have come to understand it has to be, it is a part of the whole, and something we all have to endure for a time. One day it will all be fixed.

1Th 2:16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.
1Th 2:17 But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.
1Th 2:18 Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.

he uses people to try to bring us down , get us to believe lies, keep us from the truth.put evil thoughts in our minds ,hoping we will accept them as truth!

That is why all these different religions and churches on the earth! He has caused all these divisions!

The true church is not divided ! but the flesh minds can be!

Trust this. You couldn't even begin to fathom Satan's power which is precisely why God offers you refuge in his Son at a time of his choosing? Otherwise you would have already been devoured by the devil. ;) Might wanna give God a little more thanks for that next time? Illness (i.e. Job) is the least of your concerns in this regard and also thank God you are oblivious to the rest of Satan's power. Hallelujah!

Satan has no power over those who are submitted to God.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

Awesome answer, now I know what you meant. Thanks for the clarity. Just a question...if you will. How do we know whether James was talking about Satan himself or just a devil? Either way we see our Lord resist Satan with the Word of God in his temptation and the end result....Satan fled from him.

Thanks again brother,

Gary

Good point, and note that it can mean any kind of accuser, man or devil of which Satan is chief.

Another point to be made is that resisting the devil is not enough by itself, firstly we must be submitted to God and in being submitted to God we are submitted to each other in love and respect. We cannot ignore our responsibilities concerning offenses with others and remain submitted to God. This is why I think it is so difficult for us to reconcile differences because the enemy immediately interferes knowing if things are resolved you will once again be enabled to resist him.

Thanks for the response Gary, iron sharpens iron.

Yes,Ha-Satan means "the accuser" and in the old testament was a title or position bestowed on person(player). Accusation is personified just as wisdom is personified.

Revelation 12:10
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

Accusation against the brethren is cast down once and for all in Rev. Ch.12.We are called it resist it now and cause it to flee.Flee is a strong word to use so we should notice a difference if we are resisting.

John 8:44
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

So Jesus said Satan or the devil is a liar so then any accusation against the brethren must also be a lie.
Jesus said that he(Jesus) was the truth.
That which is true is only temporary and subject to change but the truth never changes. The truth is Jesus is the Lamb of God who was slain before the foundation of the world.
It is true that I am a sinner but it is not the truth.
The accuser loves to point out that which is true and sell it to us as the truth.
Jesus confronted Satan with the truth of God's unchanging word.
It's no stretch to think we should do likewise.

2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

hmmmmm......

I don't think people should blame ''satan'' for things. And as for ''power''
......it is sin that destroys men,not satan...
Romans 3:23:For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Sin arises from within.

Matthew 15:17-20:17Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 18But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.
19For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.

Mark 7:18-23:<sup class="versenum" id="en-KJV-24482">18</sup>And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
19Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?
20And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

James 1:14-15:14But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

''satan'' simply means adversary, which can actually be men.

Why would a supernatural fallen angel ever disrupt God's plans?
Why would God allow something like ''satan'' to live?
If there was a creature like satan around, why would God allow satan to torment Job?
If you read in Job,you can see God did those things to Job not satan.(Job 19:6-13,Job 19:21)

Romans 5:12:Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

''by one man sin entered into the world''

Isaiah 45:5:I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:

Exodus 20:3:Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
