“To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

“I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, that in everything you were enriched in Him, in all speech and all knowledge, even as the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed in you, so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:2-9 NASB1995)

The church of God, in this context, is not a church denomination. It is not a building called “church.” It is not a place you go to once or twice a week which you then leave until the next week. And it is not incorporated (merged, combined) under the state as a business being marketed to the people of the world, as many of what are called “churches” today are. The church is the universal body of believers in Jesus Christ who have died with Christ to sin and who are walking in obedience to his commands, in practice.

So if we, by faith in Jesus Christ, have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, that means we have been made holy, set apart by God, and separate (unlike, different) from the world because we are now being conformed to the likeness of character of Jesus Christ, by the Spirit. For, by God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ, we are crucified with Christ in death to sin and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin, but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness, in obedience to God.

And this does not take place in our lives by verbal professions of faith in Jesus Christ only. The Scriptures make that clear. For if we say that we are in fellowship with God/Christ, or that we know God/Christ, but while we continue in deliberate and habitual sin and not in walks of obedience to our Lord, then we do not have fellowship with God/Christ and we do not know God/Christ. For not all who say, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God the Father in heaven.

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

And the grace of God, which was given us in Christ Jesus, which is bringing us salvation, is training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives while we wait for Jesus’ return. For Christ “gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

[Titus 2:11-14; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Romans 6:1-23]

So, the grace of God is not just forgiveness of all sins and the promise of eternal life with God in heaven. For it was the grace of God which sent Jesus Christ to that cross to take upon himself the sins of the world, whereby he put our sins to death with him in order that, by God-persuaded and God-gifted faith in Jesus Christ we will now die with Christ to sin and walk (in conduct, in practice) in obedience to his commands. For this is what our salvation is all about, us dying to sin and obeying our Lord, in practice.

Now, if we are of genuine biblical faith in the Lord Jesus, and so we have died with him to sin, and by the Spirit we are daily putting sin to death, and we are now walking in obedience to his commands, in practice, we will also receive gifts and ministries from the Lord which are of the Spirit and by the Spirit and not of human flesh. And as followers of Christ we are to be putting into practice the gifts and ministries given to us by the Spirit, in the power of God, for the glory of God, and for the salvation of human lives for eternity.

And this is not about having to be absolutely perfect! But the Lord separates those who are of genuine faith from those whose faith is not genuine, according to our works. If we profess faith in Jesus Christ with our lips, but we continue in deliberate sin and not in walks of obedience to our Lord, our faith is of the flesh and not of God. But if we deny self, die to sin, and follow our Lord in obedience, in practice, by the Spirit, then we have the promises of God that we can count on, provided we remain faithful to him to the end.

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:6-8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; Hebrews 12:1-2; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” Acts 16:25 NIV ‘84

Lord, I praise You forevermore.
You, my Savior, I now adore.
Hope in heaven awaiting me,
Because You died at Calvary.

I have been forgiven,
And I’m bound for heaven.
Jesus set me free from
All my sin, I say.
I will praise Him always!

Lord, I love You for all You’ve done:
Overcame death, my vict’ry won!
Jesus saved me, and now I’m free!
I rejoice in His love for me.

I will walk in vict’ry!
My sin is but hist’ry!
I am free to please Him
With my life today.
I will love Him always!

Lord, I thank You for giving me
A new life bought at Calvary.
Loving Jesus, I meet with Him.
Tender mercies now flow within.

Lord, I am so thankful;
Through my Lord, I’m able
To sit at His table;
Fellowship with Him.
I will thank Him always!
