2Cor 2:17 For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.
1Tim 6:5 and constant friction between men of depraved mind and deprived of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.
1Tim 6:6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.
Tit 1:10 For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
Tit 1:11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.
1Pet 5:2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;
I suppose God is OK with Christians having money. Joseph of Arimathea was rich. Solomon was rich. But I think there becomes a point when it becomes excessive and the money has you, not the other way around. How many multi-millionaire pastors have gotten rich from "selling the gospel".
This isn't just pastors, but even famous Christian book-writers. I don't think anything is wrong with selling some inspiration/spiritual books. But are you trying to get rich off of the way to salvation? ...and, if you are.... is it truly the way of salvation?
Not only are some of these people selling salvation, but even spiritual gifts.
There is a church less than 10 miles from my house doing this. There is a large church in Northern California doing this.
Acts 8:9 Now there was a man named Simon, who formerly was practicing magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great;
Acts 8:10 and they all, from smallest to greatest, were giving attention to him, saying, "This man is what is called the Great Power of God."
Acts 8:11 And they were giving him attention because he had for a long time astonished them with his magic arts.
Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike.
Acts 8:13 Even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed.
Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John,
Acts 8:15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 8:17 Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money,
Acts 8:19 saying, "Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit."
Acts 8:20 But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!
Acts 8:21 "You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God.
There are churches "selling" you the Holy Spirit, (as if it could be bought). Just send me $1,000.00 and I will tell you what your spiritual gift is
and how to use it. This is dangerous ground.
Besides, you don't get to pick your gift (neither does the church for that matter).
1Cor 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
