In Luke 4:16-30, this is the scene where Jesus preaches in his hometown in the synagogue. Starting in Luke 4:23, Jesus is harsh with how he responds to these people. Jesus said, You’ve all heard about the things that I have done in Capernaum and other places. Doubtless, somebody here is going to say, physician heal yourself. Let’s see some of those miracles that we heard about in Capernaum, can you do that here. Jesus did do a few things, but he doesn’t do what he could do. Why, because Jesus was just shocked at their unbelief and to dig at them, he said, You know there were lots of widows in the days of Elijah, but only one of them had enough to eat and drink. Only one of them got by, the one from Zarephath. There were lots of lepers in the days of Elisha, but only one of them was healed, Naamon the Syrian.

These people know what these two people have in common, those two people had faith. Jesus is shocked at their unbelief and they get angry. By using these two as examples, Jesus is saying you people are pathetic. They get angry, because what does the widow of Zarephath and Naamon the leper have in common? These two people are pagans, they are Gentiles. Naamon lives in Syria, the widow of Zarephath lives in Sidon, this is Gentile territory. Why is that important, because Jesus picks two people hopelessly cut off from any of the things that would assist them in their salvation.

Take a look at Naaman, he is never going to observe one of the feast days at the Temple. He’s never going to be connected to the sacred calendar of Israel. He’s not getting circumcised either. After Naamon was healed, he goes to Elisha, but he brings nothing to the table, he’s totally empty-handed. Think about it, here’s Naaman theology. Naamon is saying to Elisha, I’m clean now, now I really know Yahweh is the true God of Israel. From this point on, whenever I offer my own little sacrifice, I’m only going to do it to Yahweh, can I take some dirt back with me? But does Elisha jump in and say don’t do that, you got to go to the Temple, you’re not going to do that right?

But Naamon has this question, he has this nagging doubt, I got to be honest with you Elisha. You know, part of my job is I got to go into this temple, this temple of this god who I no longer believe in. I just want to know that when I go in there with the King, and we do our little thing that we’re supposed to do, how does Yahweh feel about that? But what does Elisha say, shalom, go home. We really need to look differently at Faith. Naamon has no work to bring to the table at all, all he’s got is his belief statement, his faith.

Naamon is actually the perfect example, there’s a reason why Jesus endorses him as an example of faith. What counts, Naamon has nothing to bring, he has no single point of merit about him at all. His entire relationship to the true God, to the God of Israel is based on believing. If God looks at two pagans and Jesus endorses this, because he uses them as an example of faith. Then the only thing that matters is whose side are you on? Who is your god? Who do you believe in? Who do you trust? If it’s good enough for these two pagans, why isn’t it good enough for you?

Paul uses Abraham, pre-law, pre circumcision, he’s trying to make the point, it’s by faith. Salvation is by faith, there’s no personal merit and performance has nothing to do with a right relationship to God. Allegiance, there’s never a question in what a believer should believe. We sow what we reap, but as far as our relationship with God, we worship no other. This is what God wants from us, believing loyalty.

by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make s
traight your paths.

At Pentecost, the people of God were aligning themselves in their believing loyalty to Yahweh incarnated now in Jesus Christ. The Spirit has come, the indwelling of the Spirit in all who believe. And the reason the Spirit has come is to empower not just a prophet here and there to preach, but to empower everyone who believes to go into the nations and reclaim them. What are your works of Faith?

We are God’s representatives. We carry the name of God with us. We don’t do it lightly or dismissively or in a way that drags down God’s reputation. Bearing the name, like when you’re in the community, we are a representative of our family, of your church, of your company. We bear the family name, we bear the company name. If we are kind of a jerk or screw up, we know that’s going to reflect badly on the people with whom we are associated with by the name. We don’t what to live in such a way where we represent God poorly.

Bible speaks of only one way to get eternal salvation. "One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.(Ephesians 4:5,6). The next time someone asks you what faith you are, tell them there's only one faith. The road to eternal salvation starts with knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. God doesn't want us to memorize two or three verses, but instead he left the entire bible so we can learn how to get salvation. If we learn it, believe it and obey it (the bible), salvation will be our reward. For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. (Matthew 16:27)

Before you can start any task you must first know about it and without the key of knowledge we are lost. "...thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make the wise unto salvation..." (II Timothy 4:15).

However, with all the various doctrines (teachings) it's hard to know which road to take. Many claim that it really doesn't matter saying, "you serve God your way and I'll serve God my way." Since the Lord is the author of eternal salvation we can only obtain it by serving him his way (Hebrews 5:9). Some choose to rely on the wisdom of their pastor by putting his word above God's word.

Nevertheless, in judgment each one of us will give account for our own salvation. Therefore, we must not let anyone lead us down the wrong path, but should verify all of our teaching with the holy bible. YOUR SALVATION IS AT STAKE! "...work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12).

Jesus warned us that the road to salvation is straight and narrow and that only a few of us will find it. Many are traveling down the wrong road, which leads to destruction. This is because many of us have heard about salvation but few of us want to do what is necessary to get salvation (many are called but few are chosen). (Matthew 7:13, 14) Many contend that Jesus did it all and now all we have to do is have faith.

The bible says, we must not only be a hearer of the word, but a doer of the word also (James 1:21-22). DON'T FOOL YOURSELF! If we really have faith in Jesus our actions will prove it. If Jesus is our Lord then we will obey him. Even a child will obey a parent, by getting good grades in school, for the reward of a new bicycle. The child cannot earn money for the bicycle, but instead must act upon their faith to receive the free gift. We must do the same to receive eternal life. "FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD” (James 2:20).

Some say you must obey God's word, but then they turn around and teach contrary to God's word. At best they never get around to explaining exactly what kind of works are needed to get eternal life. A man asked Jesus this very question, "...What good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?", and Jesus replied, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. (Matthew 19:16-19).

This was a direct answer to a direct question, which all of us will do well to take heed to. Anybody can claim to have faith, but actions speak louder than words. Faith and works go together and you can't have one without the other. "Here is the patience of the saints; here are they that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus" (Revelation 14:12).
