I love the old hymns that aren’t sung very often in today’s churches. So, for today’s devotional, and from time to time, I will be sharing with you, some of these great old time favorite hymns that I so thoroughly enjoy. Today I have chose a song written by Ira Forest Stamphill (Feb 14, 1914 - Dec 30, 1993), who was a well known American gospel songwriter of the mid-twentieth century.
Stanphill was born in Belleview, New Mexico and at the age of 10, he had become a fluent musician, having learned to play the piano, organ, ukulele and accordion. At age 17 he was composing and performing his own music for church services, revival campaigns, and prayer meetings. As a singer evangelist, Stanphill traveled the United States and Canada extensively and around the world to forty countries over his career to preach and perform his music.
Many famous secular singers performed his works, which were received with great acclaim and are still popular. Entertainers such as Elvis Presley (Mansion Over the Hilltop) and Johnny Cash (Suppertime) are among those who have performed Stanphill's works. "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow", "I Walk with His Hand in Mine", and "We'll Talk It Over" are a few of his titles that are familiar and still performed today. Stanphill died less than two months shy of this 80th birthday in Overland Park, Kansas, and was interred in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, Johnson County, Kansas.
For today I have selected a great hymn entitled “Room at the Cross for You”. I sincerely trust you will enjoy this old hymn as much as I do, and especially the message it has for us today:
The cross upon which Jesus died,
Is a shelter in which we can hide;
And its grace so free is sufficient for me,
And deep is its fountain as wide as the sea
There's room at the cross for you,

Closing thoughts:
My beloved, when Jesus Christ bore our sins at Calvary (1 Peter 2:24), the cross took on a new significance. There the Savior, “through the blood of His cross,” made it possible for us to escape judgment and be reconciled to God our Creator (Colossians 1:20-21). God’s Word tells us that because of Adam’s fall in the Garden of Eden sin entered the human race. And because God is holy, something had to be done to take away the sin if man was to be restored to fellowship with God.
In Hebrews 10, the Bible speaks about the animal offerings of the Old Testament and compares them to the death of Jesus. Hebrews 10:4 states, “It is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.” Thus, God’s plan was to sacrifice His only Son, Jesus Christ, so that we could be restored to fellowship with Him. So, Jesus suffered and died “for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world” (1 John 2:2). Because of His death and resurrection, all who accept His offer of salvation receive complete forgiveness and eternal life (John 3:16). The question that remains for you would be - Have you come to the cross of Jesus Christ for salvation?
