Romans 5:10: Actual Atonement

Preaching Reconciliation !

Something to know about legal and objective reconciliation of the Elect, and that is this, that all the Elect while being enemies to Christ and God, are nevertheless legally still reconciled, received into God's Favor up until they are born again by the Spirit, or saved by Christ's Life Rom 5:10b. This means, but I do not teach it from scripture, but it does mean if an elect person were to die before new birth, that they would still be saved from the penalty of their sins, by the blood of Christ, that they would die objectively and legally reconciled into God's Favor by Christ's Death alone ! All of the sin and enmity the Elect by Nature have against God, while they are yet unconverted , and alienated from the life of God, and yes unbelievers, all that has been satisfied for by the blood of Christ ! In fact legal and objective reconciliation by Christ's Death Alone is that Propitiation John writes of in 1 Jn 2:2 !

2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Propitiation:

akin to hileos ("merciful, propitious"), signifies "an expiation, a means whereby sin is covered and remitted."

The whole world of 1 Jn 2:2 is a world that has all of its sins remitted or covered. Like David said about the blessed Man Ps 32:1

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven or remitted, whose sin is covered.

That's the blessing of Legal Reconciliation/ Propitiation !

The Propitiated World is a Justified World

Those who unwisely appeal to 1 John 2:2 to argue that Christ died for every single human being without exception do not understand the legal definition of the words they are using. If you teach a universal propitiation, you are textually forced to teach absolute universalism.

Look at how Jesus Himself connects propitiation directly to justification in the account of the publican in Luke 18:13–14:

“And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful [hilaskomai] to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified [dikaioō] rather than the other...”
The word for "merciful" here is the Greek verb hilaskomai, which means to render propitious, to appease, to conciliate, or to make propitiation for.
The noun form of this exact verbal root is what John uses in 1 John 2:2: hilasmos, meaning the actual means of appeasing or a completed propitiation.

Notice the immediate judicial sequence that Jesus establishes: The moment a sinner has God propitiated (hilaskomai) toward him, that sinner goes down to his house justified (dikaioō). God’s wrath is appeased, Justice is satisfied, and a formal judicial decree of “Not Guilty—Righteous” is pronounced.

This creates an inescapable dilemma for the universal atonement advocate:

If Christ is the hilasmos (propitiation) for every individual human being who has ever lived, then every individual human being has had God's wrath perfectly appeased toward them. And according to Jesus’ own words, every single one of them must be justified.

If you argue for a universal atonement in 1 John 2:2, you are forced to conclude that the entire world without exception has been declared legally righteous before God and cannot go to hell. Since Scripture rejects universalism, it textually destroys universal atonement. The "whole world" in 1 John 2:2 is the world of the elect—the only world for whom Christ successfully appeased divine Justice and legally secured a verdict of justification! 2

Reconciliation = Justification !

Many who are unaware of the blessed effects of the death of Christ, by not realizing, and rejecting the Truth that reconciliation to God by the Death of His Son Rom 5:10 is the same exact thing "as now being Justified by His Blood" Rom 5:9 !

The foundational collapse of synergistic soteriology occurs when it attempts to separate the forensic categories of the gospel, treating "justification" and "reconciliation" as independent, sequential events. Conditional systems argue that Christ completed a general reconciliation at the cross, but that a sinner is not legally justified until they perform the act of believing. The Apostle Paul completely refutes this artificial division by utilizing a tight, structural parallelism in Romans 5:9–10, demonstrating that Legal Reconciliation and Legal Justification are the exact same finished work.

Look at the identical, parallel columns the Holy Spirit constructs:

Romans 5:9 (The Forensic Status)Romans 5:10 (The Covenant Reality)
“Much more then, being now justified...”“For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled...”
Instrument: “...by his blood,”Instrument: “...by the death of his Son,”
Efficacious Guarantee: “...we shall be saved from wrath through him.”Efficacious Guarantee: “...much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”
Paul is not describing two different stages of salvation; he is describing a single, objective, and completed courtroom reality from two different vantage points. The structural markers are perfectly co-extensive:
  1. The Instrumental Equivalents: Paul parallels “by his blood” with “by the death of his Son.” The clearing of the debt and the pacification of justice are achieved by the identical, historical sacrifice of the Surety in 33 AD.
  2. The Timing and State of the Object: Verse 10 explicitly anchors the timing of this work: “when we were enemies.” Because an enemy is an unregenerate unbeliever, the reconciliation was fully accomplished independent of human faith. And since Reconciliation is mathematically identical to Justification, it stands as an unyielding legal fact that the elect were forensically justified at the cross while they were still enemies.
  3. The Logical "Much More": Paul employs a fortiori logic (“much more”). If the past-tense death of Christ possessed the absolute, intrinsic legal efficacy to justify and reconcile a hostile, ungodly enemy, it is a total impossibility for that person to perish. The greater work—the legal satisfaction of justice—was fully finalized at Calvary. The lesser work—the vital application of faith in time—is the guaranteed, necessary consequence of that finished sacrifice.
To deny that Reconciliation is Justification is to strip the cross of its immediate, forensic power. Those who reject this identity are forced to teach that a person can be legally reconciled to God while remaining actively condemned under His judicial wrath—a total legal absurdity. In John Gill's High Calvinist paradigm, the equation remains unbroken: Christ's blood successfully justified the elect, His death completely reconciled them, and the gospel stands not as an invitation to create peace, but as the victorious announcement of an already completed legal triumph. 2
