"Don't be afraid," Moses answered them, "for God has come in this way to test you, and so that your fear of him will keep you from sinning!" Exodus 20:20 NLT
It was just a few weeks since the people of Israel had left Egypt. They enjoyed a quail buffet and manna for breakfast, and God even supplied the water they needed. Yet they still grumbled.
The top of Mount Sinai was roiling with thunder and lightning. Smoke covered the peaks The people were afraid of God. So Moses met with God and then delivered His revolutionary rules (Ten Commandments). Each rule enhanced relationships. God came to the mountain in glorious splendor so the people would experience awe and wonder. He wanted the people to obey Him, but His glorious display didn’t seem to penetrate their hearts.
Don’t make the mistake of seeing God at work and then shrugging it off as if something normal has just taken place. Work through your resistance, and because glory is due, give it to Him. Don’t view God’s work as commonplace. He steps in because He loves you. He gives you rules because following them brings you closer to Him. He rescues to shorten the time you must endure trouble.
Prayer: God, I don’t want to be ho hum about You. I don’t want to shrug off and dismiss Your gifts. I don’t want to invite apathy to my journey with You. Help me get rid of these things I don’t want.
