"I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. John 17:15

On this day in 1934, after a whirlwind ascent hastened by political cunning and treachery, Adolf Hitler consolidated the two most powerful offices in Germany and became president of the new Third Reich. Underestimated by political enemies who had first sought to control and then minimize his reach, Hitler’s reign of terror changed the world forever.

Remarkably, even though it seems that the world would never allow another leader like Hitler, history since World War II is full of such men. They seek a throne and a name for themselves, and they care little for the people they must crush to try and achieve their goals.

God in His sovereignty permits such leaders to rise to power. It would be foolish to try and figure out why, but God’s grace is sufficient for you. That Jesus prayed for your protection from Satan and his devices—as opposed to your immediate rapture off the planet once you were saved—is proof that He still has work for you to do.

The way you face challenges and afflictions might be the greatest witness you’ll ever bear. People are watching you, to see how you, as a Christian, react to hardship—a deeply personal loss or a national crisis. Study God’s Word so you’ll know what to say when such times arise.
