Save us, O LORD our God, And gather us from among the Gentiles, To give thanks to Your holy name, To triumph in Your praise. Psalm 106:47 NKJV

When Paul talked with philosophers in Athens, he pointed out the irony in their thinking about idols: “Since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill” (Acts 17:29 NIV).

Paul knew that humans tend to recreate God in their image, so he repurposed their idols to better connect the good news with that particular city’s cultural bent.

When King David captured articles of gold and silver fashioned into idols, he repurposed them. He dedicated them “to the Lord, as he had done with the silver and gold” he had received from “all these nations” (1 Chronicles 18:11 NIV).

Like the psalmist, the kings of Israel, and the apostles, Jesus’ followers dedicate whatever this world might offer them—wealth, success, notoriety—to the purposes of God.

Are there things in your life that take priority alongside your fellowship with the Father and other believers? If so, you can dedicate most of those things to God and repurpose them so they become ways of sharing Jesus Christ with your culture.

Prayer: Lord, help me repurpose the idols the world tempts me with so that I can use all things for Your purposes.
