Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 1 Corinthians 2:12 NKJV
Ancient Greece placed a high value on worldly wisdom and philosophy. That’s what makes Paul’s statement in today’s verse stand out. Then as now, if a Christian wanted to understand the things of God, he couldn’t rely on what the world around him offered. Instead, he needed to rely on the Holy Spirit.
Today, you probably aren’t tempted to look up to and emulate Greek philosophers, but you might be drawn in by self-help motivational speakers whose advice often subtly elevates the flesh or personal desires over the biblical principle of sacrifice and dying to oneself.
Which voices are you allowing to speak to you on a daily basis? Examine the list of authors, podcasters, radio and TV hosts, websites, and magazines you enjoy on a regular basis. Are they consistent with scriptural teachings? Or are they appealing to your fleshly desires?
After rooting out several, quickly replace them with godly voices who will help you understand and rely on the Holy Spirit. You don’t necessarily need special training.
Quiet your heart, open the Word, and the Spirit will speak to you.
Prayers: Lord, the world is a noisy place. So many people claim to have answers to my problems. May I trust Your Spirit alone to guide me.
