As for these four young men, God gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. Daniel 1:17 NKJV
While in Babylonian captivity, Daniel, who had been chosen for the king’s service stuck to his convictions and “resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine” (Daniel 1:8). Instead, he asked for nothing but vegetables and water (Daniel 1:12) for himself, as well as for Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. His request was granted, and shortly thereafter, God gave them knowledge and understanding they hadn’t had previously.
Daniel’s desire to stay pure was more than admirable, and God blessed him for it. In what ways are you choosing to not defile yourself? Maybe you need to pull away from mainstream music, certain television shows or movies, or social media. Don’t do it in an attempt to be completely separate from the world, but rather to remain undefiled. God may bless you for it by giving you more discernment, insight, and understanding.
As a believer, you have been called to keep a delicate yet healthy balance. Billy Graham once said, “We come in contact with the world, and yet we retain our distinctive kingdom character and refuse to let the world press us into its mold.”
Prayer: Lord, give me the conviction to remain undefiled in the midst of great worldly temptation. And please give me the wisdom to engage the world for redemptive purposes.
