casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5
Since the fall, mankind has been relying on itself as the arbiter of truth. And the godless rest in their own reasoning, as if they were an end unto themselves.
Paul often battled false philosophy. He "reasoned and argued" from the scriptures with the Jews in Thessalonica for three Sabbaths about the need for Jesus to die and rise from the dead (Acts 17:2). Later, he encountered Epicurean and Stoic philosophers and engaged them in discussion (Acts 17:18).
The darkness is not pushed back with physical weapons. Instead, one of the ways it loses ground is when the people of God refute faulty arguments, theories, and reasonings as Paul says in today's verse.
Are you engaging in civil discussion with people who oppose the Christian worldview? If not, how will they ever learn that their reasoning is faulty? You don't have to be a scholar. Simply preach Christ crucified and hold fast to the resurrection. God will be with you.
Prayer: Father, I don't always feel adequate to contend for the faith the way I should. Forgive me for the times I've fallen short. Embolden me to present the faith to critics, for Your glory.
