Pumpkin Man

Mickey marks his small garden pumpkins,
with the names of his kids,
written in tight formal script.

His pumpkins are green,
hardly seen,
beneath leaves
as large
as elephant ears.

As each gorgeous pumpkin,
gorges on sweet summer rain,
the engraved names enlarge and expand.

One never knows how pumpkins will grow,
will they be flat or tall?
Round or small?

Mickey’s children visit their pumpkins,
to mark in mind,
the progress and process,
toward pumpkin picking day.

Each big berry
is adored half-a-season,
before color ever comes,
first an autumn blush,
then a glow,
a bright October orange.

On picking day,
the children’s pumpkins are arranged,
and displayed.

Come carving day,
every pumpkin with a name,
is sculpted by the child with
the guiding hand
of dad.

The evening ends with illumination --
bright eyed,
wide smiling pumpkins
powered by an
inner candle transformation.

We each have a soul name,
etched there by God,
He knows who we are,
and watches us grow
on the vine of life.

At picking time,
we’re harvested,
our names intact,
identifying who,
and what we are,
and were.

And then we are transformed,
beautified by God’s
sculpting,
self revealing,
with the added inner
brilliance of God’s
glowing love.

Let us pray: Great Maker of pumpkins, children and vines, call our names, etched in our souls, so when the time comes, we know the way home. Amen.

Our Thought For Today Is: We are known by God by name. We are recognizable in all our features.
