Present day Prophets?

Are there prophets today? Are they necessary today? If God relied so heavily upon them in the past, where are they now? Is it merely the concept and office of a prophet that has changed since Christ (due to verses such as " the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy," and "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.")? Is it that every spirit filled believer has become a prophet (Rev 10:7-11)?

Hello,

No not every believer stands in the office of prophet.

Ephesians 4:11-12
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Yes God still Has His prophets today.

But please know that the devil also has many false prophets and i say many false prophets. The majority of so called "prophets" are false, you cannot learn it, it is Given by God as God Calls and Chooses His prophets.

Many believers have the 'gift of prophecy' but that does not make them a prophet yet. A real prophet (also called Seer in OT) has more gifts besides prophecy all working together to know certain things that are hidden from others. Not everyone is a prophet!

Yes (red emphasis mine):
Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Eph 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
We have been given the five fold ministries God's governmental structure for the body of Christ) till we walk in the measure of the fulness of Christ. Since that has yet to happen we still have biblical grounds for such. Also, I know several people who could easily fit into some those titles.
Another thought, why believe in Pastors, Teachers, Evangelists and drop Apostles and Prophets? The answer is simply many bodies of believers lack the power of the Holy Spirit and thus try to discount His moving.
If the are the end times (and I believe they are) then we sorely need all nine gits, all nine fruits and all five offices working today.

If any prophet is true to his/her calling, I wouldn't expect that one to be any more popular with the church today than at any other time in church history.

Amen

That's hysterical but true! I do get tired of hearing the need for "getting back to the biblical way where prophets were renowned." Which of the prophets died of old age or in high standing in the church (Matt 23:29-39)?

1Co 12:4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit.
1Co 12:5 And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord.
1Co 12:6 There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.
1Co 12:7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
1Co 12:8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
1Co 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
1Co 12:10 and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.
1Co 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

1Co 12:28 And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.
1Co 12:29 All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they?
1Co 12:30 All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?

I would say very few (if any) have ALL of the spiritual gifts.

and the truth shall make you free

I do get tired of hearing the need for "getting back to the biblical way where prophets were renowned." Which of the prophets died of old age or in high standing in the church...?

From a child, I had a prophetic calling placed on my life, although I was not consciously aware of it until about 16 years ago, at which time I also received an anointing of the Holy Spirit which included speaking in uninterpreted tongues. All of this did not come about in some denominational setting.

My flesh does not particularly relish the calling; I am a "reluctant" prophet. Yet my spirit knows that there is no other way but for the will of the Lord to be done!

True prophets are never popular. They'll tell you where your sin is, how long you've had it, and what it will take to get rid of it. They will walk into a situation and they'll just read your mail. You can see why the church couldn't have any of that.

The prophets of God began to be killed off immediately following the passing of Jesus Christ. Such persecution continues to this day; a prophet is least welcome in his own home town. The enemy has placed many false prophets out there because he wants you to throw out the true ones along with those false ones. The enemy certainly does not want you to know that genuine prophets of God still exist today.

Daniel. Although some of his writings are still forbidden to be read in the synagogue. They point to unerringly to the Messiah.

1Sa 12:2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.

Samuel

All Seers are Prophets.....but not all Prophets are Seers
If a Prophet speaks and what he says does not come to pass.....do not fear this man.

There are many that the Lord would have as prophets, but they do not do what the scriptures say to do.

1
Jn 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
1Jn 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
1Jn 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

The problem is, is even when a prophet does test the spirits and the Lord gives them the truth that is not according to the doctrines of men, they are called a false prophet. In the same breath the false prophets are called true
prophets because they tow the line and stay in the box of what is accepted. Mammon is quite the trap for prophets as in the need for acceptance, and ordination along with the fear of exclusion. Seems to be the battle that Elijah
had while holed up in his cave. He feared for his life, but seems he also feared not being accepted by the other prophets of the time as well.

For a number of years God has been raising up Apostles and Prophets. There are many self appointed or appointed by those without authority so calling them a Prophet is like calling a fish an elephant. No matter how loud you say ELEPHANT it is still a fish and has trouble breathing out of its element. To charge for a Word from God, or to charge to have breakfast with a "prophet" or to have a seminar where you must pay x amount of money to get in and then have collections taken at intervals does not sound right, proper or fitting. A true Prophet goes where God tells him and speaks what God has said or shown him. A Prophet hears Gods voice and sees in the Spirit. He is accountable to God. He knows God will provide for Him. You can not bribe a Prophet. My friend a true Prophet was offered not long ago $1,000,000 a month to be a certain person in Texas their exclusive Prophet. He refused and continues to trust with whatever gifts or offerings are set before him. Trust me in this......to be a Prophet is because God has called you and is not a way to get rich. If that is your goal you would never be called.

There is a grave trap that our culture has fallen for, and it goes like this:

The Enlightenment hit the western world, which for the first time truly espoused an atheist and secular morality. For the first time, society was open to the possibility of a "good" philosophy which excluded religion and excluded God. This lead to many centers of learning and knowledge to abandon theology and turn to pure research. That in itself is not necessarily a bad thing (I am okay with my doctor's office not holding church services, even if I'd prefer my doctor to have similar values as me). In the Dark Ages, the culture and literacy of Ireland was preserved through St. Patrick and his value for monasteries. But in the New World, people began to pursue knowledge apart from God.
What eventually happened is that the Church felt the need to "keep up with the Jones'"...
As a result, the Materialism philosophy was subtly incorporated into the American Church. Spirituality became devotions; prayers became ritualistic; ordination became academic. The American Church at large has forgotten the rich spiritual heritage of our faith. It is an utter shame that fringe groups and cults have become the standard-bearers for the power of God.

Do we have prophets today? Yes. But they're being snatched up by 'charismaniac' loonies, career ministers, the New Age movement, and the Occult. That is one of the primary reasons I'm in youth ministry. Nobody in this country should have to walk the road I did to find the Truth.
