You want what you don't have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can't get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don't have what you want because you don't ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don't get it because your motives are all wrong--you want only what will give you pleasure. James 4:2-3

Many say prayers under pressure. These are spontaneously uttered during the worst possible life moments. They’re not often part of regular conversations with God, and—for many people—may not even be sent with an understanding of who God is or what He wants.

You can look at the first part of today’s verses and conclude that all you have to do is ask and God has to give you what you want. However, this passage was actually a response to the way early Christians had been dealing with selfishness: “You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them” (vv.1-2)

Prayer can be proof that you’re following God’s lead. As you draw closer to God you begin to speak prayers that reflect what you’re learning. As you grow, you’re less likely to ask for something you already know He couldn’t answer with a yes.

Your prayer life always reflects your relationship with God. When you know God wants the best for you, you’ll begin to ask for His best because you will want His best.
