Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; Ephesians 6:18

On the first Thursday of May every year, the United States observes a National Day of Prayer. In 1952, the United States Congress passed a resolution encouraging Americans to “turn to God in prayer and meditation.” Since that resolution every president every year has signed a proclamation encouraging Americans to pray on this day.

While you, as a follower of Jesus, should be grateful that your nation has set aside a day to focus on prayer and meditation, and while you should do everything you can to encourage others to pray, you should do everything you can to encourage others to pray, you should also make every day a personal day of prayer.

There are certainly occasions and life situations that call for a more focused, more fervent time of prayer. But you should always remember that God wants to hear from you—and speak to you—as you spend time every day in prayer.

So pray every day. Pray and give thanks and praise to God. Pray for your nation and its leaders and representatives, pray for your family and friends, pray for those you know who need Jesus, and pray for your church. The list is endless. So are the opportunities.
